Thanks for the replies folks, My ultimate aim is to integrate my xp oem
sp1 files with xpsp3 as per instructions at howtohaven.com by
slipstreaming. They tell me to get into the dos window to do this. I can
get the command prompt ie c:\> but cant get rid of the > . I dont know if
it makes any difference. Anyway at the command prompt
C:\>xpsp3.exe /integrate:C:\xpsetup enter, as per instructions. The
answer in the window is "xpsp3.exe is not recognized as a internal or
external command, operable program or batch file"
So Im stuck what to do next. I havent had a lot of experience with dos
window commands.

This was the easiest tool I found for slipstreaming SPs. You can set many
other options, including unattended install, or leave it at default
settings. I made OS CDs for 5 different machines at work, including drivers
and keys for each. It couldn't have been easier.

Here is a good walkthrough:

You might try this. Right click your desktop and select New...Short cut.
In the Location box copy and paste this:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe Since it should be the same path on most
computers perhaps it will work. You can name the shortcut Command Prompt.
Leave it on your desktop for easy access if you use it often.

When you get C:\>, it is THE command prompt waiting for you to enter the
necessary commands. So it makes no difference if you can't get rid of
it. There is a way to remove it (by typing prompt $) but don't worry
about it and don't do it.

To integrate your SP3, you need to know where have you saved the
downloaded file. If you have saved it to c:\tmp (with the name
xpSP3.exe) then the command is:

c:\>c:\tmp\xpsp3.exe /integrate:c:\xpsetup [enter key]

This assumes you have copied the entire Windows CD to: c:\xpsetup folder.

I found what I did wrong last time - the file was named
xpxp3.exe\xpxp3.exe anyway that sorted I got the integrate process
started but a window came up with "do you want to make changes to this
computer". i cancelled out of the process because Im not putting this OS
on this computer just making a disk. If I kept going with the process
would it alter the computer im doing it on . thanks

Your inexperience is likely to land you in trouble. Just saying...
