You can send the short-cut to the desktop and double-click it?

I keep reading and rereading the above, wondering what you mean.

First you say you can't find the command prompt, then you say you can.
???

And what do you mean by "cant get the C:\"?

Have you tried typing cmd in the orb's search bar to get a command
window?

In the command window, try setting the prompt to $p$f - but that's the
default anyway.

If you don't like what you see, then try cd \ to get to the root.

Since I can't decode your post, I have no idea whether I've answered
your question. Well, I guess I have, by implication: yes, I have ideas.

If you want a command prompt, you can type 'cmd' into the search box.

Once you have the command prompt open, type 'cd \' to get to the root.

Open the start menu. In the search box enter cmd.
Click open the command dialog icon at the top.
then enter cd c:\
one space after "cd" and no quotes.

After opening a command prompt, enter this command:

cd \

Has anyone else noticed that Windows 7 comes with no help on the
command prompt commands. They're indexed, all right, but every
single one I've tried opens up a Web page. If you happen not to be
connected to the Internet, you can't get help on the command-prompt
commands.

How are you accessing this? When I open a command prompt and type
"help <command>" I get the syntax and a short description right there
in the command prompt window. How are you launching a web page?

Oops, never mind, I see what you're probably doing. You're in Help &
Support, in the section that says "For more information about a
specific command, see the following Command Reference topics on the
Microsoft Web site". Agreed, those topics will require Internet
access, as evidenced by the 'Microsoft Web site' text.

Same with /? after the command.
Eg. CHDIR /?

If I open the command prompt window from Accessories, and then type in
"help" - without the quotes, a list of commands appears.
If I type help followed by the command name I get list of options and the
command syntax.

Like I care about what the hell you are talking about preacher? You
stupid fool, you couldn't help a fly find garbage truck in 100 degree
weather with you stinking butt setting in the front seat of the cab,
with the windows rolled down and your stinking drawls down.

Type cmd.exe into your search box. Once found then create a shortcut. Besides it
resides in your C:\Windows\System 32 folder where you can also create a shrotcut
from to the Desktop or to your Star menu

Windows key + F1 (or Help and Support Center)

Select topic "Command Reference Overview", and scroll down to the
alphabetical list of commands.

You're right that at the command prompt you can *usually*(1) get a
sketchy syntax summary by typing the command name followed by /?.
But in Windows XP you could get real help on the commands through the
Help and Support center, and in Win 7 you can't, unless you're
connected to the Internet.

(1) I found an exception a day or two ago, where commandname /? gave
a syntax error, but I can't remember what it was.

The preacher is a Linux hero over there in COLA that talks about
Windows users like they are dogs. And in his view Windows is a pos
while he is in COLA. While he is in this ng, he is a saint, but
really he is a snake in the grass.

Thanks for the replies folks, My ultimate aim is to integrate my xp oem
sp1 files with xpsp3 as per instructions at howtohaven.com by
slipstreaming. They tell me to get into the dos window to do this. I can
get the command prompt ie c:\> but cant get rid of the > . I dont know
if it makes any difference. Anyway at the command prompt
C:\>xpsp3.exe /integrate:C:\xpsetup enter, as per instructions.
The answer in the window is "xpsp3.exe is not recognized as a internal
or external command, operable program or batch file"
So Im stuck what to do next. I havent had a lot of experience with dos
window commands.

When you get C:\>, it is THE command prompt waiting for you to enter the
necessary commands. So it makes no difference if you can't get rid of
it. There is a way to remove it (by typing prompt $) but don't worry
about it and don't do it.

To integrate your SP3, you need to know where have you saved the
downloaded file. If you have saved it to c:\tmp (with the name
xpSP3.exe) then the command is:

c:\>c:\tmp\xpsp3.exe /integrate:c:\xpsetup [enter key]

This assumes you have copied the entire Windows CD to: c:\xpsetup folder.

It makes no difference whatever.

Meaning no disrespect, that's pretty basic. If you're doing
something with the potential to screw up your computer if it goes
wrong, and you know that little about the command prompt, you might
do better to get someone local to help you.
