For me, pressing "C" while Irfanview is in the foreground brings up theCtrl-F12 is the hotkey I was referring to (except that in my
IrfanView the hotkey seems to be Ctrl-F11).
That is *not* the same thing as clicking on Options -
Capture/Screenshot in the menus, which doens't capture anything
(in my copy of IrfanView).

OK, I see the problem.For me, pressing "C" while Irfanview is in the foreground brings up the
Capture options dialog. This is the same as selecting Options | Capture
Screenshot" from the menu.
After you choose Start from that dialog, pressing Ctrl+F11 executes the
screen capture according the the current options. You can press that
key combo multiple times to take multiple screen captures, whether or
not Irfanview is in the foreground .

Of course, any program will stay resident if you don't exit from it...It
might not do anything useful, but it will stay resident

visit and stayed resident until Mom terminated his visit. As I recall,
he didn't do anything useful while he was resident.
