FastStone Image Viewer is still freeware/donationware, and as well as
being a fantastic image program, also provides the same functions as
FastStone Capture.
Does it stay resident?

Ctrl-F12 is the hotkey I was referring to (except that in my
IrfanView the hotkey seems to be Ctrl-F11).

That is *not* the same thing as clicking on Options -
Capture/Screenshot in the menus, which doens't capture anything
(in my copy of IrfanView).
For me, pressing "C" while Irfanview is in the foreground brings up the
Capture options dialog. This is the same as selecting Options | Capture
Screenshot" from the menu.

After you choose Start from that dialog, pressing Ctrl+F11 executes the
screen capture according the the current options. You can press that
key combo multiple times to take multiple screen captures, whether or
not Irfanview is in the foreground .

From the website,

"Run when Windows starts (optional)
Minimize to System Tray area"

Of course, any program will stay resident if you don't exit from it...It
might not do anything useful, but it will stay resident :)

OK, I see the problem.

Without pressing C or clicking on the Capture, the program isn't
monitoring the magic key. But every time I played with it, I pressed C
or clicked on the menu item and nothing seemed to happen. Then I pressed
Ctrl-F11 and something did happen.

So I thought C etc did nothing and only the magic key worked, not
realizing that I had inadvertently started listening for the hotkey :)

After reading your reply, I started IrfanView and did *not* press C or
whatever, and lo! Ctrl-F11 was dead. All is now clear to me. (maybe)

Reminds me of my Uncle Mervyn. When I was a kid, he came over for a
visit and stayed resident until Mom terminated his visit. As I recall,
he didn't do anything useful while he was resident.

And once again your contribution to the thread is superior to mine...

I guess I'll just have to try it to see if it is an operational
replacement for FastStone Capture. If FastStone Image Viewer provides
all the functionality of FastStone Capture and a lot more, why is it
free while FS Capture isn't?

Dunno. FastStone Capture is maybe slightly less 'fiddly' to use than
using FastStone Image Viewer's capture function, but both do the job
excellently.

Well, I like the convenience of FS Capture. It sits quietly in the
system tray and no matter what I am doing, if I want capture some or all
of what is displayed, I just hit a selection of hot-keys, variations of
PrtSc. I never have to open the program. I usually save the image to
clipboard and past it into Paint Shop Pro, but I could save it to a file
with a timestamp. A snapshot of the setup page will give you an idea of
its versatility:

Almost forgot another neat feature of FS Capture. It can grab scrolling
windows in their entirety. If you want to capture a web page or other
display that scrolls vertically and/or horizontally, just select the
scrolling window option (Ctrl-Alt-PrtSc). FS Capture will do the
scrolling and capture the whole window area. For example, this thread:
