If you want to experiment, in a way that is independent of your current
setup, you can install a new newsreader, and practice on aioe.org .
It doesn't have an authentication system, works on the standard port,
and accepts around 25 posts per day. Use the alt.test group on there, to
send, to reply to yourself, check what happens when a signature is
present
and so on. And then, go into your current tool, and read the messages
you just posted, and see how they appear. That way, you won't lose
your ability to use WLM, while you investigate a new newsreader.

Port details (119 plaintext is good enough).

Agh thanks Paul, if it's free I'll have it. I've just installed
aioe.org, but as you see, it has the same problem as those I post via
news.individual.

Bertie

The "greater than" indentation marks, (>), are inserted, (or not), by the
newsreader. It doesn't matter what news server you use, you will never see
them with WLMail 2011.

My last sentence said it. "Plus, I don't want the same program for
news and mail".
Oh. I am just the opposite. I wanted one program to handlke both, like
OE. Another thing I like about T-Bird is that it is available in a
portable version.

Yes I think you're right Bob. I believe Forte Agent is about $30 - is this a
one-off payment?
Yes, it's a one-time payment, but you don't pay up front unless you
want to. Try it out for 30 days and see how you like it. While you're
at it, try a few other newsreaders, too. Many are free, many more have
free trials.

I like an older version of Agent, while others like Thunderbird and
yet others like something else. Try a bunch and see which fits you
best.

Download and install Thunderbird. Set it up, to use aioe.org, using
details from their web site. Then, try using Thunderbird, reply to
yourself in Thunderbird, then check in WLM and read the same group,
and see how it looks. Alt.test is there, for doing test posts, and
won't disturb your regular news groups.

I was hoping you'd do it all in Thunderbird (testing with AIOE), and
that way, wouldn't mess up WLM settings.

Thunderbird will do the quoting automatically for you. If it detects
a signature ("-- " near the bottom), it deletes the text after the
signature mark automatically as well. Then, when you bottom post below
that, there will no longer be a "greying out" of your reply caused
by the signature which is still there. Because Thunderbird removes
the last signature, it won't interfere with the appearance of your
reply.

The quote character choice can be changed on newsreaders, but
I recommend leaving the "> " choice as is. Perhaps that way,
more tools will recognize it as quoting.

I'm the one who recommended Agent, but I strongly agree with the above
advice. Don't think that what I like best is best for you. Try a few
and see what *you* like best.

Stan, your sermon might have more impact if, at a minimum, you shortened
your signature AND removed the spam.
Are you insane?

I'd switch anyway, Bertie. It has many other problems apart from the quote
marks - not the least is that it doesn't handle signature markers
correctly, resulting in even more difficulty reading message written by it.
As it doesn't add quote marks, the whole of any reply to a message with a
signature effectively becomes part of the previous poster's signature. That
usually means it is shown very faintly or stripped out altogether
(depending on the reader's settings) , so your message probably won't get
read at all. The longer any thread which was started by, or contains
messages written by, WLM gets, the worse the mess gets. Some people have
started setting up rules to delete all messages written by WLM, so great is
the hassle it causes.
It is for that version. I have the latest paid version of Agent and like it
- but I prefer 40tude Dialog. Although few programs have *all* the features
working as I would like, 40tude Dialog ticks more boxes (for me, at least).
As it's free you can try it and see if you like it. You can get the basic
2.0.15.1 here, and then add the .84 update - fully stable, AFAICS.

Thanks Paul, I've saved your post. I'll try Thunderbird, if I'm not
comfortable with, I'll go Forte Agent.

Thanks all.

Again: If you're comfortable with Windows Live Mail and would like to
continue using it, Delete all of WLM in "Add/Remove Programs" and install
the old version 14. It doesn't have the problem, but you'll have to be sure
you don't allow the Update of WLM2011 to install.

Microsoft has made everyone remove Version 14 (135MB), so...download it
ASAP:

Yeah, I saw that too. I just did a copy/paste to put it in, now you have to
copy/paste the middle into your browser.

Not for me. Using T-Bird 2, the actual URL is highlighted in blue and is
quite clickable.

Probably just trying to get even with you :)

You did, after all, criticize him...
