No. Avast checks for viruses, Defender checks for Spyware.
I had never paid any attention to this. I looked on the web, tried to
download it from MS, it said I already had it in the control panel. Looked
sure enough there it is. Said it was off, click here to turn it on. I tried
a couple times, all I get is the little circle spinning. Nothing ever
happens so I finally just close it all.

Do you have Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, Norton, or McAfee
installed? If so, they turn it off because it duplicates what they do,
and you can't turn it back on while one of those programs is
installed.

Yes MS Security Ess. I had thought when they came out with it that it
claimed it did spyware as well as Virus but when I saw this talk of the
Windows defender I thought maybe I was wrong and missing something.
Makes sense now thanks.

I do have a choice, I just had no idea that WLM was screwing up replies
so bad. Thanks for pointing it out to me, I rarely go back read what I
post, and I don't ever hardly pay attention to the formatting when I do
post. Maybe this should work a little better. I'm not a big fan of
Thunderbird but in the name of proper quoting on Usenet I will make do.
Thanks from me too.
