A confession and a grumble

FF = The FireFox web browser.

There's probably a similar "Ad Blocker" (maybe not by the same name) add-
on for your brand of browser.
Thanks, Andy.

Google UK is a little harder to set up ( all the search providers listed
are US)
You have to go to Google UK enter TEST . Yes in upper case, then copy the
answering url and paste it into the add your own in Explorer. IE8 does
have instruction under Manage search providers then the blue text at the
bottom "learn about search engine providers"
Thanks, Trev! I shall have a look at that:)

When I first came here, I was spitting blood about have to have Win7 on
my new laptop. Well, yesterday, I found how to change desktop
backgrounds! Whoopie I said when i saw the 'Windows Classic' and I
changed it immediately.

How drab it looked! So, I now have the 'United Kindom' background and
what lovely photos they are:)) I have been learning more about where
things are and I worked through a lot of stuff which was new to me
yesterday. Would I go back to XP? Hmmm that gets less and less likely:)

Heh who woulda thunk it:))

Now for my grumble. I am having a fight with ms because it is
determined that I shall use 'bing' and I am determined I shall not:) Is
any one happy with it, or happier than with their previous search engine?
I moved my default search provider to Bing shortly after it came out and
like it better than any I've used. It's new and IMO, clean. The results
are "more current" than with google, yahoo, ask or several others. YMMV. :)

:)
I'm also a BING user by default. Works wonderfully for me, clean, easy. I do
have a number of additional search providers set up in IE 8 and it's very
simple to search the alternate providers with the same search term when
needed but I don't use the alternates very often.

Would Google Desktop have installed itself without any input from me?
I didn't download or install it.

On the W7 Home Premium 32-bit Taskbar:
Start button/Google search box/IE/Explorer etc.

No such thing this time.
I have Googled for this, but after days of plodding through possible
solutions and trying out what others have done, I decided that it was
almost as quick, if less fun, to hit WEB on my keyboard :)

Thanks Trev.

Grenou
I used it some time back from the task bar but after a reinstall of windows
XP it was gone as expected I serched for Google search bar or whatever and
found the new one that gets added to the explore tool bar bit chocked but
thought nothing of it. and of course Explore 7 and 8 had one built in But
its only this last 2 weeks that i discovered the Google Desktop
http://desktop.google.com/
When it was first launched Many years ago it was Heralded as a Great time
saver as it can be used to search the computer not just the web and I'm sure
the downloaded news messages. Handey for finding Kris Z referances in Our
Groups
So you may have downloaded it so long ago you don't remember. Ps It now has
a side bar and gadgets but If minimized only the search entry on the task
bar.
But don't forget the win 7 search is just inside the start button and that
will open your default search engine if you click search every where .

Now that *is* interesting. I haven't actually used bing, I just resented
being made to use it!

Well, if you say so, Bob, I suspect I will need to try it out.

Am I about to be proved wrong again? :))

No one is making you use Bing. That just happens to be the one provided
during installation. It is easy to add other search engines and make any
of them the default. You can even remove Bing if you want.

To be fair Google is not what it was. Most finds lead to other search
engines and who pays the most Advertising revenue go to the top. But I still
use it Maybe I should try Chandler Bing

I find all this search toolbar stuff to be useless anyway....what's the big
deal? I don't know how it works in the other browsers, but with IE all you
have to do is type whatever you want to search for in the URL line and hit
enter and it will search for it using whatever default search engine you
have selected. Why does anyone need an additional toolbar specifically for
search?

Bing is something you use with IE, it's not really got anything to do
with Windows 7 OS. Change your IE search provider in IE to one you like.

Oh yes:) I have removed it, but I am now questioning that. I hated Win7 to
begin with too:)

Thans Trev.
I use the Windows 7 Search utility all the time, it's a great time saver -
if I use the right words (!).
This is the search box I had on the 32-bit system:
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/google-quick-search-box-in-windows-7-taskbar/

I re-downloaded the Google toolbar, but still haven't got that search box
:-(

I have used the Google Desktop previously, but don't have it installed this
time.
