A confession and a grumble

O

Ophelia

When I first came here, I was spitting blood about have to have Win7 on my
new laptop. Well, yesterday, I found how to change desktop backgrounds!
Whoopie I said when i saw the 'Windows Classic' and I changed it
immediately.

How drab it looked! So, I now have the 'United Kindom' background and what
lovely photos they are:)) I have been learning more about where things are
and I worked through a lot of stuff which was new to me yesterday. Would I
go back to XP? Hmmm that gets less and less likely:)

Heh who woulda thunk it:))

Now for my grumble. I am having a fight with ms because it is determined
that I shall use 'bing' and I am determined I shall not:) Is any one happy
with it, or happier than with their previous search engine?

Windows 7 is pretty and has some nice features, I especially like the
Libraries the Taskbar
I use my own desktop wallpaper, but the Microsoft UK and Architecture series
are gorgeous and I do switch those on every so often.
But I am not wild about the way Explorer works, it can be very irritating.
I am avoiding Bing and have Google set as the default search engine.
On a previous computer, where I installed Windows 7 32-bit, the Google
search box appeared next to the Start button, now that I have a new computer
with Windows 7 64-bit, that hasn't happened.
After 3 weeks of trying to figure it out how to get that box there, I have
now given up.

There are more niggles and annoyances than there should be with a 'new and
improved' operating system, which is a shame.
You'd think, that after all the beta testing MS + testers did, everything
would run smoothly, it doesn't.

Good luck trying to avoid Bing :)

I usually use pics of my dog:) I have yet to get to it, but I do like the
UK one:)

Well don't. I can't help but I am finding more and more things that I
almost gave up on and am getting the hang of now:)

All true. In the past I have always avoided new os until the bugs had been
ironed out and I never got around to Vista at all. But there was simply no
choice this time.
Good luck trying to avoid Bing :)
Thanks:)

I prefer Google.
Try opening IE8 and at the top right-hand side there is the
small search box. Next to the magnifying glass icon there is
a drop-down arrow.
Select 'Manage search providers'.
If Google, or your favourite provider, is not shown then select
'Find more search providers' at the bottom.
Pick your search provider and Ok out.
Once you have more than one search provider listed you can remove
the ones you don't want, like Bing etc.

You should try Ixquick. It is a Canadian search engine which has the
advantage of NOT keeping track of your actions.

I wrote a big thank you for this, but I can't see it:(

Just in case it doesn't appear thank you very very much:)

I also made comment that you are very good at this... and I am very pleased
you are and that you are so helpful:))

I trust the folks at Google much more than I would ever trust MS even
though Google also keeps info.

In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, General, and under Search, click on
the Settings button. A box will come up, Manage Add-ons.
Click on Search Providers on the left side, and a list of providers will
show on the right. If Google (or your choice) doesn't appear on the right,
click on 'Find more search providers...' in the lower left corner.
Find the one you want and click the 'Add to Internet Explorer' button.
Right-click the one you want as default and select Set As Default. If you
want, check the box at the lower left next to 'Prevent programs from
suggesting changes to my default search provider.'
Close out of this box, then Apply and OK back out to IE.

Hope that works for you :) In Classic mode, I don't know if the search box
that Dave-UK mentioned shows or not.

Unfortunately, IE's manage search providers only gives you options IE
wants. For Ixquick for instance, go to

http://s15.ixquick.com/eng/download-ixquick-plugin.html

and click on "Install".

I have no connection with Ixquick other than as a long time user. It is
just as good as Google and a lot safer ......

If you use FF with the Ad Blocker add-on, you can enforce "Block Google
Analytics".

I changed the Classic mode back again. I didn't like it:)

P.S. I don't like Bing either, and will stick with Google until something
better comes out :)
Yes indeed:)

That always cracks me up. If you don't trust Microsoft, you shouldn't be
running Windows. Don't you think Windows could be built to send everything
you do on your computer to Seattle if they were so inclined? I prefer
Google, myself, but not because I'm afraid MS is going to track my
search history! If anything, adding Google to the mix adds a new threat
to my security without avoiding an already accepted one.

FF = The FireFox web browser.

There's probably a similar "Ad Blocker" (maybe not by the same name) add-
on for your brand of browser.

Google UK is a little harder to set up ( all the search providers listed are
US)
You have to go to Google UK enter TEST . Yes in upper case, then copy the
answering url and paste it into the add your own in Explorer. IE8 does have
instruction under Manage search providers then the blue text at the bottom
"learn about search engine providers"

----------------

Would Google Desktop have installed itself without any input from me?
I didn't download or install it.

On the W7 Home Premium 32-bit Taskbar:
Start button/Google search box/IE/Explorer etc.

No such thing this time.
I have Googled for this, but after days of plodding through possible
solutions and trying out what others have done, I decided that it was almost
as quick, if less fun, to hit WEB on my keyboard :)

Thanks Trev.
