I cause enough pain unintentionally; I'll never understand the desire to hurt people on purpose.
And I really hate when people rar a zip of a rar - that tends to make me think they are trying to hide something. So you are absolutely correct, it's not a bad idea to expand the compressed file to a folder (and expand again if that is compressed, etc) and then virus scan again.
There is the other possibility too though, and would truly justify a bad WOT score ... some sites take perfectly good applications like BitTorrent, that they know are popular and they throw a malicious installer around it - you get the real program but they got YOU. So it is generally safest to go to the home site and use there download links or approved mirrors.
