Copying & pasting error dialogues. Win7

Often the copy & paste will not work for the text in error messages.
Is there a way to avoid typing them out? Peter

Printscreen and a photo app that accepts printscreen output?
(Usually paste as new image)
Naturally, you end up typing anyway, unless you have a scanner utility
that can read the image and extract the text.

I do have the Windows "Snipping tool" so I'll use that.

it is truly lame that windows system error messages can not be blocked
and copied, but a better way to capture the information that
alt-printscreen or the snipping tool would be to click the start menu,
point to 'computer', right click, and then click 'manage'. this will
open a window titled 'computer management' where you will find the
'event viewer' where errors are logged. the event view does allow on to
block and copy the messages. good luck.

Sometimes just clicking away from an error message will close it. To
get round this problem I now use a digital camera to take a photo of the
screen when an error message appears. That way the message is
immediately stored. If necessary you can download the *.jpg from the
camera to the PC and either display and retype it or just used the saved
file for reference.

As an alternative, Print Screen is also your friend.

Sometimes it's because "how you do it", for instance you open an Office
application to paste into. Office fires off its own clipboard, and what
you copied is no longer available. Try pasting into Notepad instead.

I also echo the same to the post that Bob I posted here. Use Notepad to do the
copy\paste function all and every time

How about taking screen shots?

I mentioned that a few hours before your post. Get familiar with Print
Screen and Alt-Print Screen. Print Screen grabs the whole screen,
while Alt-Print Screen grabs the active window.

Others in this thread have recommended pasting into Notepad rather
than an Office application, but I always use Word 2003 and have never
had a problem.

I frequently copy data, open an Office application, and paste the data
into it, without any problem.

Perhaps you already have another Office application open. ie. Outlook or
Excel is open and you copy something and open Word? That will do the
effect you see.

Not at all.

Furthermore, I had already retried it earlier today, carefully paying
attention to my actions so as to make sure I hadn't misremembered what I
had done.

If it hadn't worked I would have reported it here, I promise.

Humm, then maybe the new Office clipboard subsumes the Windows clipboard
now. That would be a nice fix.

Not new. I have Office 2003.

I should have mentioned that in my first post here, sorry about that -
rather careless, I have to admit.

Like you, I use Office 2003 and my experience matches yours. I didn't
know it wasn't supposed to work until I read this thread.

Done some more testing, I was mistaken. It isn't Office apps (except
Excel in some configurations) that is doing the erasing. It is when some
applications are closed that the clipboard is cleared. If you have one
of the apps that do that, then if you copy, close the app then go to
paste the clipboard is empty. Anyway I've been opening both source and
target apps for copy paste to preclude loss of contents for quite awhile
now. Anyway sorry for the confusion.

No problema.

After all, one reason I had to do my experiment is that I was struggling
with my own confusion as well :)
