I want to run programs that were compatible with xp...including a dos
program, qb45 basic. Do I need to install virtual xp to be able to do
this on a windows 7 computer .. 32 bit?

Haven't tried that one but I would expect problems with the Win7 64 bit
version, not the 32 bit one.

Have you tried to run the programs in compatibility mode?

No, 32-bit Win 7 will run most of your XP software OK. It also
runs QBasic and QB 4.5 although you can't use graphics since that
would require full-screen and DOS programs can't run full screen in 7.

If it's really a DOS program, as opposed to a Windows program, you
can run it in the free DOSbox. It was suggested to me, and I'm
successfully running dBase IV in it.

I would advise taking a look ( a rather prolonged and serious one - do not
dismiss it after 10 minutes) of QB64. This is a sort of successor to QB45
with extras but (sadly) with a WIKI instead of the brilliant help system of
QB45. You can do dlls in QB64, or so they say.

The crucial point, which is well nigh impossible to discover, is that it
must be installed on a FAT disk (volume if you like). You can get an
external drive plugged into a USB port for not very much money, and make a
FAT drive of a couple of GB in seconds.
If you insist on QB45, try doing the same with it. I don't bother with
virtual XP or dosbox for that sort of thing: both are last desparate
throws.

I of course have not a clue what will happen in 64 bit windows 7, but for
current purposes that is not relevant.

Most anything that ran under XP will run under win7 32. It's win7 64
where you start running into problems.

For example, I cannot run my skype thingy under windows 7 without
installing the virtual Xp to install the 32 bit driver to talk to the
skype box to route calls to my handsets.

seems a lot fo trouble...
