XP Mode

All this talk about XP Mode has me confused. I just got Win7 64bit. If
I have a device (a scanner) for which there is no 64-bit driver, can I
run it under XP Mode on Win7? I *have* heard that devices need such in
order to work under Win7, but not sure if it applies to XP Mode.

TIA

Any time you need a feature like this, in a virtual machine environment,
you have to explicitly check the documentation to see if it is available.

WinXP mode (WinXP image run as a virtual machine - this is the guest OS)
|
Microsoft Virtual PC (successor to VirtualPC 2007)
|
Windows 7 (the host OS)
|
Hardware (accessible directly by Windows 7, for others, requires "tricks"
and working with existing protocol stacks or drivers. Only
Windows 7 can be guaranteed of having a shot at the hardware,
in this picture.)

*******

This is a list of virtual machine environments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_platform_virtual_machines

If we look at the Microsoft entry...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Virtual_PC

and in particular [10] in the reference section, we see this.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/features/default.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/features/compare.aspx

"Windows Virtual PC supports many USB devices such as printers, scanners,
flash memory/sticks and external hard disks, digital cameras, and smart
card readers.

which implies some improvements have been made since VirtualPC 2007.

That means, you *may* be able to get it to work. Getting stuff like
this working in a virtual environment is not a sure thing. It always
ends up being a "grand experiment".

When I tried to do something like that in VirtualBox, it took me
two tries before I got it to work. My first attempt was a
dismal failure (lots of error dialogs). Maybe your experience will
be more pleasant.

*******

Now, we look for actual examples.

http://www.sevenforums.com/virtualization/61082-windows-xp-mode-w7-help-use-usb-device.html

In there, you can see this picture. If your scanner was USB connected,
there is a chance it might work. If the scanner is connected via
some other interface, the answer could be quite different. You'd go into
the WinXP Mode window frame, install the 32 bit WinXP driver for your USB
scanner, and give it a try. The menu in the picture, seems to provide a
mechanism to state what hardware you'd like to use.

Good luck,

Paul's long answer is excellent, and I endorse what he says.

There may, however, be an alternative. I was in your situation, with
a Canon LiDE 50 scanner that has no Cannon driver for Windows 7 or
even for 64-bit Vista. Thanks to the kindness of someone in this
newsgroup, I was able to download an unofficial hack that has worked
just fine. So if you haven't already, try googling for your scanner
model and see if one of the user-to-user sites points to a 64-bit
Windows 7 driver.

And if by any chance your scanner is also a Canon LiDE 50, you'll
find drivers here:

As a matter of fact it IS a LiDE 50!! You must be psychic or something
:) I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Hi Stan,

The name Zaidy036 looks familiar.
But in fact I pointed you to that Canon Lide (64) driver.
Anyway, I'm glad I simplified your cluttered life ! :)

Does your scanner still makes more noise as you mentioned after
installing that alternative driver?

Zanqeutil

All thanks to Zanquetil.

And a hint: set preview to letter size. If you set it to full size,
it overshoots by a bit and makes a clunking noise (at least on my
scanner).

Thanks again, and did you see that the recent questioner also has the
same scanner? So you've helped two of us!

No, it doesn't make the noise. I set the scanner to preview letter
size instead of full size. (Sorry, I can't remember the exact wording
of the option.) Apparently the 60 was just a little longer than the
50, so with the LiDE 60 driver doing full size it overshot the
physical boundary of the LiDE 50 scanner.

Your welcome,

I have set my Canon scanner to preview A4 size, that's what we generally
use in Europe. But it sometimes makes a clunking noise after
callibration, just before the preview scan starts. Nothing to worry about.

Zanqeutil
