XP file sharing

I have an XP machine that has many shared directories. I also have
one hidden directory.

On my main machine (Win7) I can see the shared folders from the XP
machine (\\winmx) fine. I can also access the hidden folder by
entering \\Winmx\hiddenfolder$ into . I am never asked for a
password.

I tried today to share a complete drive on the XP machine by adding a
$ to the drive letter. I get this message on the XP machine.

I answered yes and I get this message:

I have answered yes and no.

When I enter \\xpmachine\d$ I get this password prompt:

Also, from the XP machine, if I try to access the "sharing and
security" option using D: drive as the target, the drive share boxes
are not checked like the drive has not been shared.

Is there a way to share a drive from the XP machine and not get
promted for a password on the Win7 machine?

in XP there is always a hidden share on every disk (c$, d$, etc) for
administrators only

replacing the existing one I suppose you made a little mess

use a different share name, i.e. dd$

Forget what I have done with my machine. Say a new XP machine was
connected to the network and has a d: drive.

If I try to access it from my Win7 machine, would it try to access the
"always hidden share" d$? Would I be prompted (on the Win7 machine)
for a username/password?

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe whenever you
use the "$" following a share name, it is always treated as
a root or administrator share, as Ammammata said. This means
you will always be prompted for the root password. So try
naming the shares without the $.

BTW I have a Win7 and an XP box here and I share folders both
ways. I have never been ask for a password, but I don't use
the $ in the share name.

No, only for the default "admin" shares. You can add the "$" to any share
name to make it invisible (eg: \\servername and they won't show up in the
browse list)

I ended up just moving the folders to a single sub folder in the root
and sharing that.

Thanks everyone

Ok, thanks for the correction.
