A wallpaper graphic, a Start button, three icons, and a virus.
I thought the virus arrived on the MS Windows install CD? ;-)

The Windows Essentials 2012 (WE12) suite of programs is intended for Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The installer includes:
Windows Live Mail
Photo Gallery and Movie Maker
Sky Drive (desktop app)
Windows Live Writer (a blogging client)
Windows Live Messenger* (deprecated)
Silverlight (if not already installed)
Outlook Hotmail Connector (if Outlook is installed)
Family Safety

* Windows Live Messenger is a legacy product and has reached its product cycle end-of-life. If installed, it will no longer
function and upon first use prompt to upgrade to with MSFT's replacement product - Skype

The WE12 installer has two modes of installation
1. All applications installed
2. Choose which applications are to be installed
****Use #2****

Hi group,

What do I get if I DL windows essentials?

Endles problems.
Like what, once installed it runs seamlessly. How good is it?, who knows.
I've never had a real virus, but have helped others who have. To be really
safe, maintain image backup of system and use common sense computing
habits.

Hi group,

It changes a bit with time, and there are options to install only what
you wish; here's a *rough* list:

Windows Family Safety
Windows Live Mail
Photo Gallery
Movie Maker
Windows Live Mesh
Writer (for blogging)
Bing Bar

Now-a-days, if you want Messenger, Microsoft says to instead install
Skype - another free for download program.

Live Mesh was replaced with SkyDrive
- the backend server for Mesh was shut down

Photo Gallery and Movie Maker are now one packaged installation (install both or neither)

Bing was removed from the installer

Live Messenger can be installed, on first use it will prompt to upgrade to Skype. Declining the upgrade will close Messenger. I.e.
the upgrade to Skype as far as Microsoft is concerned is mandatory.

Jonathan (the program's author), a good friend, and previous MSFT Mvp knows more about Messenger (program and coding) than anyone
on the entire planet.

Here's the direct link to the his site which explains and provides the download.
<http://messengergeek.wordpress.com/>
<http://messengergeek.wordpress.com/...ver-2-to-bring-back-messenger-and-beat-skype/>

His efforts will be appreciated and welcomed by many. I salute him for his efforts, skill, providing an alternative to the
deprecation of Live Messenger, and including myself and a few others in the programs credits (Reviver/About).

It's important to understand that 'reviving Messenger' and clearly noted on the MessengerGeek download page is a temporary solution
(for a short period of time). The time period is
1. Until MSFT shutdowns the ability to logon to the backend server
or
2. Until March 2014 when the entire server and connectivity to other needed servers housing sync data (i.e. your contacts) is
turned off and fully discontinued.

As noted earlier (and I was extremely careful and clear how that earlier statement was/were worded).
- The upgrade to Skype as far as **Microsoft is concerned** is mandatory <g>
