Windows7 Update erases all email in storage folders

S

shorti

Whenever Windows 7 updates, all of my saved email that has been stored in
storage folders is gone.

Outlook Express still shows the From, To, Subject, and date of all
previously stored messages, but
selecting a message dated before the update results in a popup window that
says the message can't be found.

1. What's happening?

2. How do I store email so this doesn't happen?

Outlook Express isn't supported in Windows 7, and development of Outlook
Express has ceased, I suggest you acquire and install a different e-mail
client.

Tom
Step 1: use an email client that works in and is supported by Win 7.

Step: storage folders? Please explain what that is and why you think
Windows Updates have something to do it.

Microsoft are trembling in the long grass over this one. I had a
similar experience a few weeks ago when an overnight update shuffled
my Explorer folders. Hence my Outlook10 folders needed rearranging,
and it all took a lot of work. Bah!

Tom
Unless you take extraordinary measures to get OE running under Windows
7, it is doubtful that you are using OE under Windows 7. Since Windows
7 doesn't come with any e-mail client, and since it seems unlikely (but
possible) you are running OE on Windows 7, just what e-mail client are
you using where "all of saved e-mail stored in folders" is gone? OE
saves into .dbx files, not folders as does, say, Windows Live Mail.

Are you using OE on Windows 7? If so, just how did you get OE on that
OS (which comes absent of ANY e-mail client)? Did you mean WLM or
another e-mail client and mention OE by mistake?

Just WHAT is the folder under which all e-mails (in some unidentified
format) that gets erased? If you managed to get OE installed on Windows
7 (in the Windows XP virtual machine called XP Mode) then the path to
its .dbx files is based on that OS. The path it uses might not work if
somehow you otherwise transplated OE into Windows 7 proper.

One is tempted to conclude that concurrent events have the same
underlying cause. Not always true of course...

Anyway the Outlook10 was throwing up error messages about "not found"
and this disappeared when I rearranged the Explorer folders to their
original configuration.

No problem, it's an easy trap to fall into, and you may have done it
twice. First, equating a possible overnight update to your Explorer
folders getting "shuffled", whatever that means, and second, equating
the Outlook issue with the Explorer issue.

If the Outlook issue happens again, make a note of the actual error
message in its entirety. It may be something that needs to be fixed
rather than ignored.

them.

Windows 7 and Outlook Express... That's definitely a layer 8 error, no
fix for that.
2. How do I store email so this doesn't happen?
Get mail, print it, bound the pages, that worked for the past 3000 years.

I was picturing one or more unspecified folders being viewed in
Windows Explorer, but you're right, it's hard to see how it could be
more vague.
Or more accurately, I have several ideas and no way to choose among
them.
At this point, any approach requires way too many assumptions. We
weren't given enough information to know in which direction lies the
first step.*

Hi, Tom.

Your post was made with Windows Live Mail, the successor to Outlook Express.
As you probably know, OE will not run at all in Vista or Win7 (except in XP
Mode in Win7 Pro or Ultimate).

How do you know that OE still shows From, To, etc., for your messages? Or
was that a slip of the finger; did you really mean that WLM shows that
information?

Several parts of your message leave us wondering just what you meant. Which
Win7 updates are you talking about? Do you mean updates to WLMail - and the
other Windows Live Essentials? I see that you are running the latest
version of WLM, Build 15.4.3538.0513, as I am.

Have you let WLM import all your OE messages? It appears that you did
because you have the metadata. And you seem to be saying that you DID have
the message texts before you updated SOMETHING. What did you update? Long
ago or just recently?

One major change between OE and WLM is the storage of news and mail
messages. OE stored all messages in a few files, which OE called "folders",
each with the .dbx extension. If you got 1,000 short messages from your
Mom, they might all be stored in one file that you might call the Family.dbx
folder. All newsgroup posts would be stored in a few .dbx files named for
the newsgroups. One other OE file, called Folders.dbx, served as the index
to all the other "folders". When these files were imported into WLM, the
individual messages would be separated into thousands of files with .eml
extensions for mail and .nws extensions for newsgroup posts. Are you
missing a few large .dbx (OE) files? Or many small .nws and .eml (WLM)
files?

As Char suggested, Win7 updates should not have affected this at all.

Sorry that I don't have answers, Tom. At this point, all I have is more
questions for you. Could you please post a more complete description of
your problem?

I did post some error messages from the Computer Management Event
Viewer, but now I've lost them all.

OTOH, I haven't the faintest idea what an "Explorer Folder" is.
These used to be called "directories" and now they appear on the LHS
of the Windows Explorer screen, they're colored yellow and they look
like little hang files. These folders can be part of a set and/or
can have sets of their own. One is reminded of:

“Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite ‘em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.
And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on,
While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on.”

or even........

Big bugs have little bugs,
Upon their bums to bite 'em.
And little bugs have lesser bugs,
And so on ad infinitum

I didn't see them. Do you have their Message ID's?

Also, what do you mean when you say lost them?

I'm still thinking of my old PC.

It is Windows Live Mail, not OE that is having the problem.

Very sorry everyone.

I have several storage folders I created for messages from family, friends,
work etc.

The message just says:
Message cannot be found
The contents of this message cannot be found.

After copying all this, the computer would not shut down because "a
dialogue was open in Computer Management" which I could not find.
Forcing a shutdown I got a blue screen. Subsequent restarting and
recovering I got a message log...

I can't remember, but one large folder had inserted itself into the My
Documents folder.
Ah, I see, a drag and drop gone bad. If your hand continues to be
unsteady, (it can also be a hardware problem, you know), then I
recommend switching to the two-step cut/paste or copy/paste, depending
on your intention. You can use the right-click context menu, which is
probably the slowest way, or you can use the keyboard (Ctrl-x/c/p), or
you can even use the toolbar/menu.
It must have had something to do with Outlook10.
No, we've already discussed the fallacy of assuming two unrelated
events are somehow related. Outlook had nothing to do with it.
The event occured on Sep28. Updates for that day were:
<snipped>

Nothing relevant there. Those are all routine.
From "Computer Management/EventViewer/WindowsLogs/Applications"

FIRST of 3.........
<snipped>

Nothing relevant there, as well. Check the System section in Event
Viewer rather than the Application section. While you're in the
Application section, though, look for Outlook issues. Do you know how
to use the view filter?
After copying all this, the computer would not shut down because "a
dialogue was open in Computer Management" which I could not find.

I would do one or more additional restart cycles at this time. If they
complete normally, then you could rest a little easier. Right now my
confidence in the integrity of your system is rather low, and not only
because of the blue screen. Who knows what other files or folders
you've inadvertently moved, plus you have/had Outlook complaining that
it can't find something, and now most recently you have an open dialog
that you can't find. The primary thing in common with all of those
things is the user. (No offense intended, the same could be said for
most people.)

As Char suggested, Win7 updates should not have affected this at all.

Sorry that I don't have answers, Tom. At this point, all I have is more
questions for you. Could you please post a more complete description of
your problem?

OK. You want more details.

My WLM is Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.0513)

I have created folders in WLM under the 'Storage Folders" heading in the
lower left side pane.
Some are called 'Saved Family', 'American Legion", '40/8', and
'Woodworking'.

I -receive- messages and move them to the appropriate folders.
I -send- messages and move them to the appropriate folders.

I have lost all of the old messages a few times.

The last time I lost them, I did some detective work and noticed that the
dates of the missing messages were from the last Windows Update and earlier.
As I now recall, that happened -every- time there was an Update.

The storage folders still show the 'To', 'From', subject, and dates of the
messages, but display :
Message cannot be found
The contents of this message cannot be found.
Windows Live Mail
in the right side pane when I highlight an old message.

When I look in the actual hard drive folder the messages should be stored
in, only the messages -since- the Update show up, even when I have 'show
hidden files' checked.
The stored messages I last looked at were existing the day before the last
Update, but are gone now.

IMPORTANT - Even MORE than where are the past messages (although I would
like to know), I want to know how to store email -outside- WLM in the future
and still be able to read it.,
