it freezes when using firefox for no reason requiring a hard reset
Open preferences in Firefox and disable all plugins.
Chances are one of them is causing the freezes.
Enabling them one at a time to see if you can find which one is the cause.

Firefox has been having some issues with Windows 7, or is it the other way around?

Anyway, I downloaded Firefox v3.6 RC1 and have not had any crashes at all.

It's the v3.5.7 of Firefox that is causing all the problems.

Have you tried running MSConfig and disabling programs from loading at windows startup?
You could also stop programs from starting with CCleaner.

I've heard others mention a few programs causing their systems to freeze.

I forgot to Welcome you to w7forums. :)
