Windows repair install of Ultimate will always fail.

Following the instructions for a repair install reports that Windows
will not allow and "Upgrade" from within the " Ultimate" version as
there is no upgrade past this version. It figures of course. It looks
like I will have to do a complete reinstall which is something I
wanted to avoid. I wonder what MS has for a workaround after the OS
being hosed my a fail update of .NET.

According to this, that's a setup check that can be bypassed.

That is a very confusing post Paul. From what I gather I will be
downgrading my OS or will there just be a bit of trickery involved? In
the end the OP decided to do a clean install and no one verified that
this actually worked. Correct? That program was "assumed" to make a
registry change but again nothing was verified. Am I just totally
confused and you actually understand what was happening or should I
just go for it and see what happens.

use this tool:

http://mp7000.deviantart.com/art/Windows-7-Enterprise-Downgrade-159805048

Start the Program and select the Version you wand to Downgrade. Then
insert you Install Disk you buy and click Install. Then select Upgrade
and Windows will downgrade your Windows Enterprise Edition.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am thinking that "Windows Enterprise Edition" can be substituted
with Windows 7 Home Premium? Then I can do and additional repair
install that will upgrade to Ultimate?

I must need to take a smart pill before I actually try this, right?

OK, Now I get it.(took smart pill). I edited the registry as
recommended. Now I am about to try this repair install again thinking
the trickery will work so I now assume I should be entering the
Ultimate key I hope? I found it with Belarc.
Well, this is your experiment :)

See post #9 here. As I would have expected. Repair install to Premium,
AnyTime Upgrade from menu to finish the job.

I just finished and now I have an OS that is downgraded to Home
Premium. The Ultimate key was not accepted so I was forced to use the
Home Premium key. Activation was needed or I got the "not Genuine"
nag. So now I will review your link and see what I can do to get back
my Ultimate.

This is the first reference I can find. Does your Ultimate key work with this ?

I don't see how I can enter my upgrade key. There is a process but I
need a PIN number to go forward.

•If the upgrade key is not inside the Windows Anytime Upgrade upgrade
key card package, review the package instructions. You might need to
first retrieve your upgrade key.

" Without a valid PIN you cannot retrieve your Product Key. PINs can
only be activated at the store where your Windows Anytime Upgrade
Product Key card was purchased. Return to the store with your receipt
or proof of purchase to activate your PIN. "

This seems like an endless loop.

I'm not up on the mechanisms (what a purchase of an AnyTime Upgrade
package gives you). But if you look around, you can see people attempting
to deal with it. It seems the Product Key is a more important thing to
write down, than the Pin.

"2. Make sure the PIN has not already been used to obtain a Product Key.
A PIN can only be used once to obtain a Product Key. If the PIN has
already been used, you can log into your account with your Windows Live ID
(if you established it when the PIN was first entered) to access your
Product Key or you can check your email for the confirmation email
you received when the PIN was first consumed to access your Product Key.

Well I will be dealing with this whole little game sometime
in the future, maybe. I have now installed a clone from last month and
I am up and running like nothing ever happened. Outlook just
downloaded all the email I got since then and with a bit of tweaking
this whole thing will be a distant memory. The last thing I
experienced was Outlook not even working with that other drive for
some unknown reason and most likely other unintended consequences. It
has been a bit of fun I quests. I want to thank you for all the help
as I wouldn't have even gotten as far as I did.
