Windows Media Player

My WMP works only when I run it as administrator. Is there a way to
make it run as admin automatically so I don't have to right-click the
icon every time I want to use it. Incidentally, when I go to the exe
file and select properties, the run as admin option is not available -
it's greyed out.

TIA.

Try right-clicking the shortcut's icon, not the exe, and selecting Properties >Advanced.
There's a 'Run as Administrator' box there.

make sure that appropriate permissions are checked for each user.

Thanks, Dave. I did just that but still have to give my go-ahead every
time, it will not do it auto. I have also gone to properties-security
and I (and the administrator which is also me) have all the permissions
available. I guess it's just one of those annoyances one simply must get
used to.

Thanks again to all for posts and private help.

There's something wrong somewhere. Perhaps you've installed a codec that Media
Player doesn't like or something. One thing you could try is to remove Media Player
and then re-install it :
Control Panel > Programs and Features
On the left pane 'Turn Windows features on or off'
Under Media Features you can deselect Media Player.

Hi Dave.

I wanted to touch base with you before (perhaps) making matters worse.
When I go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and deselect WMP I
get a message that Windows Media Center will also be removed because it
depends on WMP, and also that other programs (unnamed) could potentially
stop working if I went ahead and removed WMP. So I wanted your opinion
about this before I do anything else. Once again, my WMP works fine in
run-as-admin except that I have to tell it to run-as-admin every time I
use it. Should I perhaps leave well enough alone and learn to put up
with this minor inconvenience?

Thanks in advance.

If you have got any doubts then leave things as they are.
I normally run with UAC turned off so as a test I reset
the UAC setting back to the default and now I get a UAC
box popping up when I try and run WMP! And that's with the
shortcut set to run as admin as well, so now I'm not sure
if this is normal or not.
I'll have a Google around and If I find anything I'll
post back here.

After fiddling about with shortcuts and UAC settings I am
now confused. This is what happens on my machine with UAC on:

Double-clicking wmplayer.exe - No UAC box.
Right-clicking wmplayer.exe 'run as admin' - UAC box appears.
Right-clicking wmplayer.exe selecting 'Open' - No UAC box.

Shortcut with 'Run as admin' box checked:
Double-clicking shortcut - UAC box appears.
Right-clicking shortcut 'run as admin' - UAC box appears.
Right-clicking shortcut selecting 'Open' - No UAC box.

Shortcut with 'Run as admin' box clear:
Double-clicking shortcut - No UAC box.
Right-clicking shortcut 'run as admin' - UAC box appears.
Right-clicking shortcut selecting 'Open' - No UAC box.

With UAC off no popup boxes at all.

Hi Dave.

I have not solved the problem but I have (perhaps) made it a little less
annoying.

1. I unpinned WMP from the start menu - it never worked with either a
single- or a double-click.
2. In the security properties of the exe file I checked run-as-admin.
3. I "sent" the exe file to the desktop (shortcut) and then dragged the
shortcut to the quick-launch taskbar.

Now, when I single click the icon on the quick-launch I immediately get
the UAC box. So now it's two clicks rather than three.

Thanks again, Dave, for taking the time.
