Windows Live Mail doubt

E

Emrys Davies

I have Win98 SE, OE6 and IE6

I am going to get a new PC.

I have backed up my .dbx files, together with .dbx folderfiles, to a
FlashDrive.

I know that WLM will import messages via File > Import Messages >
FlashDrive (E?), but will it import .dbx files?

Also, will it import my suitably backed up 'Address Book' (Contacts)?

If not, what are the alternatives please?

I do not have access to WLM yet as this PC is not compatible.

Emrys,

It imported mine with no problems at all.
Also, will it import my suitably backed up 'Address Book' (Contacts)?
I didn't try this, but since the messages and their folders worked OK, I
imagine this will too.

Tools>>Accounts>>Import. Worked great for me.

WLM also has a way to import Identities. I didn't need to use it.

Have your .wab on the flash drive. Worst case, you can re-enter them
manually but I don't think you'll need to.

Hi, Emrys.

Have ALL your OE6 .dbx files (which OE calls "folders"), especially
Folders.dbx, on a thumb drive or other source that WLM can read - and be
sure that you've given yourself permission (in WLM) to read that source.
Then, in WLM:
File | Import } Messages... | Microsoft Outlook Express 6

Then Browse to the location of your .dbx files...and wait. Depending on how
many messages you are importing, this could take a long time. OE6 stores
all messages for one folder in a single .dbx file, so 1,000 emails from your
Mom would all be in Mom.dbx. But WLM stores each message as a separate .eml
file in a Storage Folder that you can create and name "Mom" - and it takes a
lot longer to process 1,000 small files than one big one. In OE, a single
bad byte in one message might cost you the whole 1,000 emails in Mom.dbx; in
WLM, only the one .eml message would be lost.
but will it import .dbx files?
Yes - and no. As I said, it will import the contents, but it will store
them as .eml files - NOT .dbx.
Also, will it import my suitably backed up 'Address Book' (Contacts)?
Yes, but not from WLM's main window. Click the Contacts icon at the bottom
left to open the Contacts screen. On the Contacts screen, click File |
Import | Windows Address Book (WAB), then Browse to your WAB's location.

(And Thip is wrong about Identities: WLM doesn't use those at all, so
there's no way to Import those.)

That is really great. You have worked hard and I very much appreciate
it. The beauty is that I understand what you have said because you have
been so explicit. Many thanks.

Emrys Davies.

Thank you! I did not think to look there. Works great. Live mail is way
better
than I expected. I did not expect MS to still support usenet. Glad they do
though.

I have tried to copy my old OE messages from my old to new PC with WLM. I followed the usual import process and all appeared to go to plan; however, I cannot find all the old emails and folders in WLM. I had set up my email accounts manually within WLM and have been sending and receiving emails satisfactorily. Can you please help me find my old emails in WLM.
Thanks
