Windows Live Essentials Vs. Avast

B

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a home built PC. I have been using Avast
antivirus for about a year now but recently I have been inundated by Avast
constantly telling me to upgrade to Pro. Since I am so anal, I don't want
to pay for something I know I can get for free, so I was wondering about
replacing Avast with MS Security Essentials. I have read that SE will
disable Windows Defender because the functionality is duplicated in SE.
What are some of the other benefits or pitfalls to switching?

This forum thread talks about the reasons for the upgrade notice and
provides at least one solution for removing the notices.

My advice is to upgrade to the new (free) version of Avast if you've
been happy with it, or choose one of the other free AV programs such
as Avira or MSE. Each of them have their pros and cons, but all three
are worthwhile contenders.

For the record, Windows Live Essentials and Microsoft Security Essentials
are two very different things.

Have you been in one too many crash tests? Because I don't see where
the OP ever mentioned Windows Live Essentials at all... ;-)

This seems very strange to me. I use Avast free edition on two Windows 7
machines and I don't get bombarded with constant update to pro requests.
I also run S/Essentials and S/Antispyware pro.
It all works fine for me.

Likewise - all I get is regular updates automatically installed,
otherwise I don't hear from them. Maybe the OP has signed up for regular
emails on the website - but I've not come across that either.

Nor do I. I've been using Avira for several years, and I don't recall
ever getting any such ads. If I did, it was a long time ago, because
I've forgotten all about it.

Are you seeing a reminder to renew your one year registration, or are
you using Avast! 4.8 and seeing a reminder to upgrade to 5.0, with an
ad for Pro? Windows Defender real-time protection should be manually
disabled when running Avast!.
