What makes this so slow to read directories with a few thousand files in
them The green progress bar in the windows takes forever. If you re-sort
the directory it takes forever again. On the other hand Xplorer2 does it
instantly.

I don't know what's wrong with the code, but it's been my
experience that the file managers that come with windows have not
really worked since Windows 3.1 (which had a great file manager).
The one in Windows 7 is better than the one that came with Windows
XP, my last OS version. I always used Power Desk in XP. Now I'm
looking for a free replacement for the file manager in Windows 7
x64. Windows native file managers seem to be crap.

Interesting. I don't like Windows Explorer in Win7HP-64bit - I much prefer
that in XP. I copied explorer.exe over from XP, but it won't run. I wonder
if there is a simple fix to get it to work in Win7?

Have you looked at FreeCommander as a possible file manager for Win7?
