I've tried everything recommended short of a total reinstall.

Can anyone help?

It just says updating for days but never updates.

You answered your own question. If you have tried all other ideas such as Microsoft Fixit for Windows Update and nothing works then you may need to consider a reinstall.

There is no way other than reinstall, sometimes any fix works on a specific computer, and maybe you have not the time to discover your persinalized fix. Try thereinstallation then.

It's a bug in windows update service it will continuously check for update but won't install any, may hog lots of ram in the process.fixed by ms in march 2016 you have to manually fix it, here is a guide :

After resolving it check this to install all updates once saving you from frequent restarts:

May I put my 4pence worth in? I have just Installed Windows 7 Home 64Bit, to replace Windows 8/8.1, and had this problem. Stuck on 'Windows Updating and waiting and waiting, Nothing connects. I have downloaded and installed a program, WSUS Offline Download' and this program worked for me. It downloaded and installed 188 Windows Updates. Please note 'It worked for me'.

Like Snapp says ,use WSUS Offline Download'. Worked for me as well. First downloaded a lot of updates (don't remember how many)then another thirty downloaded after. Seemed to kickstart "Updates".

Update for Windows 7 (KB3102810) worked for my reinstall:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49542

Microsoft released a new Windows Update Client Update to fix the slow Update searching/installation problem:

Installing and searching for updates is slow and high CPU usage occurs in Windows 7
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

Download:

32Bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=fcd6bf5d-f004-4ca3-aa7e-1de462b91dd0

64Bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4fe566bd-31b1-4413-8c4c-412b52533669

Stop Windows Update service, this speeds up the setup of MSU updates and the useless steps from Moab are not required. This can be done from the command line, or from the service manager window.

Try the downloaded update and see if it speeds up the installation of Updates.
