Windows 7 was my idea. Screenshot

The way I take a screenshot is to prnscrn and then load paint and
paste and save. Prnscrn should automatically save a screenshot in the
format you choose.

Why not use the snipping tool? Or did you get the cheap Win7 version that
doesn't have it?

I have W7 Ultimate, so I have the snipping tool. Which "cheap version"
does not have it?

I use FastStone Capture, which is like snipping tool but with more
options, formats, etc. It was free when I got it (version 5.3), but the
later versions are $19.95. If I had to buy it, I'd probably make do with
snipping tool. :)

I use MWSnap. I can use hotkeys to start the capture, which lets me grab
a screenshot of some window with a dropdown box open. The dropdown would
close if it loses focus when I click on the snipping tool.

I've read good things about FastStone, but have never used it.

I use Irfanview, does lots things including screen captures.

I just tried the snipping tool. I may try it again when I really
need screenshots. One thing I already don't like is that it doesn't
increment the filenames.

And...............it sure takes more steps than just pressing prnscrn.

prnscrn should just automatically save screenshots. That would be
one key press. Count em 1

Unless they changed, Home Premium and higher have the snipping tool.
Starter and Home Basic do not.

I have Clipmate which does many screen capture types too. It still
takes more steps than pressing prnscrn.

prnscrn is a key made for taking screenshots. It should be automatic.
Anyone think having prnscrn automatically take a screenshot and just
naming it screenshot01 screenshot02 would make it any less flexible?

If you only need an object capture you could capture it from the
screenshot using something other than the key that was made
exclusively for taking screenshots.

Ah, but that depends on what you want from a screenshot. :)

The complete screen, a window, a user definable area, or a drop down menu.

I'm sure there's always something out there that does a particular job
better than any MS supplied utility. <grin>

Originally, Print Screen would dump the contents of your display to a
printer.

How, when, would you have the numbering/naming system start over?

They could do it differently than just 1, 2, 3, etc. Snow Leopard on my
Mac puts the file on the desktop, with date and time in the file name.

At first, I didn't like the naming convention, then realized the
information it provided me. Now, I wouldn't want to have a
screenshot01, screenshot02, etc.

I'm not here to start any Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux war, just noting
other people's ideas.

I can set FastStone Capture to do exactly as you ask. Using PrtScrn
and variations of Shft, Ctrl, and Alt you can capture full screen,
active window, marked rectangle, etc. directly to progressively named
files. One feature that I really like is the ability to capture a
scrolled window!
