Windows 7 updates

Stan Brown

Has anyone else had this annoying phenomenon?

I don't actually shut down my computer; I just hibernate it.

Yesterday (Wednesday) morning when I powered up, I got the popup
saying Windows wanted to reboot to finish installing updates. I let
it do that.

Then today (Thursday), I got it again. It's bad enough we get
Windows updates once a week, but now we're getting them once a day???

Yes, I let it boot again this time.

If you don't want automatic updates, then turn the feature off, set
it to notify about pending updates, go to the Update site and do
them manually, when you are notified.

I choose 'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them' and
that gives me control and enables me to download when it suits me best and
what. Works fine and what is more Windows Live Essentials 2011 is still
sitting there waiting for the 'Off'.

it's probably because some of the updates in the 2nd reboot were dependant
upon the first updates being completed successfully. Those first updates may
have been older and MS had released them sometime ago.

Or, again the updates form the first reboot were older and therefore already
queued up (possibly form the previous patch Tuesday) and had you done a scan
for new updates before rebooting the new ones would have shown up, you could
have installed them and everything would have been taken care of in a single
reboot.

Just ideas for why you saw what you did.

I had about 5 updates waiting for me yesterday (I have Win7 set to
inform me before installing).KB2419640 failed, so I just reran it and it
went in successfully.

That's the one that failed for me as well, and I did what you did.

But now the first try sits in my update history labeled "Failed". I'm
too compulsive for that kind of treatment :)

Could be -- but I had rebooted earlier that morning after making a
configuration change via the Ultimate Windows Tweaker, so there
should not have been any queued updates beyond those downloaded from
the 1-11-11 set.

I've observed this at work, too -- it just seems like updates have to
be dealt with a lot more often than once a week. It could be just my
perception.

Anyway, I feel better now that I've got that rant off my chest. :)

I'm pleased to be like you. I too have one behind it with the same name
but labelled "successful".

This months updates had 2 files requiring separated installs and
reboots.

Quit whining, and learn what is going on.

The same here, however one does have to be careful that the box is unchecked
when installing the desired upgrades, a pity that it's not possible to
eliminate this lurking cancer from the list altogether.

You can hide the essentials update. I installed the piece of crap and
finally had to reinstall my Windows 7. I learned the hard way.

I agree, why try and fix something that ain't broke, fortunately I managed
to fix mine fairly easily, by restoring the computer to a previous good
setting.

I tried that several time to different settings and none of them worked.

What's interesting is that I did set updates to "check for updates
but let me choose"; however, when I looked just now I see that it was
set to "download and install automatically". Either Windows changed
itself, or the setting reverted because I restored a restore point.
I'm hoping it was the latter. :)
