Windows 7 Update is not working

Is there a simple Fix for this disfunction in windows 7.
I tried some suggested metods and none of them works
in my case. I've installed Win 7 from fresh and propbably
Win installer doesn't work. There is only one update installed
that is IE9. When I tried the update - it says that "service is not
running"...
TIA

First, the dysfunction is not in Windows 7 on any of the computers that
I have experience with, and no one else is reporting it on this NG....

For that reason, I suggest you do a repair installation of Windows 7
form your installation disk.

I can't tell you how to do it because it's tricky and I can't recall the
details, but the result will be that your Windows installation is better
and your other stuff is not messed up.

But as I was typing the above, I got another thought: malware infection.
Go to the website of one of the antivirus companies and run their online
scan.

Your post contained no useful information, so the above is the best I
can offer (OK, my lack of knowledge is a problem too, but what the
heck.)

Thank you for the input.
I described the fault as "Windows disfunction" because the Windows
Installer is not working properly / in fact it doesn't work at all.

I think "Windows Update (is) not working", because "ActiveX not
running," or as the info says , "service is not runing"..

I have tried already the repair of Win7, using installation CD/DVD
but is says " Windows did not find any problem" - and it procedes to
"Exit". As for AV - I'm runing Noton Int-Security almost instatly
when installing Mo/bo drivers after Windows installation complete.
So, so far no joy. As I just have started fresh installation of
Win7 - I may as well re-do itagain. It'll probably be tere and faster
solution...-;) Thanks !

I don't know what you did, but you certainly did not do a repair
install. These are the instructions:

A Win 7 repair install is done by using your Win 7 disk to do an UPGRADE
install of your installed system. You start your system as normal. Then
mount the original Windows disk and run setup. Choose UPGRADE every
time it asks you. You eventually see it doing quite a long
compatibility check then it reinstalls Windows and your applications and
settings. There are 5 phases which take several hours. Your computer
reboots several times (which means not from the CD!) Ignore the "Press
any key to boot from CD" message.

Instructions for a Windows 7 repair install, are here.

If you did it right, I would expect to see a "windows.old" directory,
which would contain the old Windows installation. So it doesn't work
exactly like a Repair Install you might be used to.

*******

When an error message says "service is not runing", you
check the Services control panel, and see what services
are running or not running. You don't reinstall the
OS as a response. Have a look around first. There may
even be information in Event viewer, as to what the problem
is.

There is even a Fixit tool for Windows Update, from Microsoft.

1) http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/
2) Type "Windows Update" without the double quotes, in the
"Filter Solutions" box.
3) One of the two items returned is:
"Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working"
4) Click the Run button on that and follow the instructions.

Good luck,
Paul

Robin, Paul,
Thank you both for help. In the end I've what I wanted to
avoid desperately. I have repaired / fixed the fault and "upgraded"
Windows 7. It works fine now Windows 7 is upgrading OS as it should.

I noticed the comment in your OP about doing a fresh installation only
after I had replied - my bad.

It sure seems something is wrong with your system, but it's nothing I
can figure out. Sorry, I wish I could help.

Now I'm going to read the other replies to see if

1. Someone already helped you

2. I can learn something :)

Me again.

From the above I get the idea that I was actually pretty much on track
with my (relatively incomplete) advice.

I also get a chance to congratulate you. Glad to see that you've got it
working OK.

Excellent. I've stored Paul's link in my favourites because it's the
full, official instructions of how to do the upgrade properly.

My idea was based on basic and common sense asumption,
that reinstalling Win7 Ult. will be better than an upgrade.
But in this case an upgrade was a right solution.
Thanks again ...
