Windows 7 Sharing

I've got a two computers running Windows 7 and I'd like for the kids to be
able to log on to either one and still have access to their 'private'
files. Is there a way to do this with homegroups or do I need to go to
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced
sharing settings\Homegroup connections and use user accounts / passwords to
manage permissions in lieu of having Windows manage homegroup connections?

Any recommendations?

Put their private files into the 'Public' folders on one PC, then put a
shortcut to these public folders on the desktop of the other PC.

Try setting it so that usernames and passwords are managed, if that
makes sense?
