No risk, but WHY?

Buy PcMover from Amazon for $10 instead. It works fine. All the
files and 90 percent of the apps will migrate ok.

As I understand PcMover works in case of transfer from one PC to another PC,
that's, as far as I can see it, not the case.

If you are wanting to make the machine Win. 7? Then just do a clean install
of Win.7. Put anything you wish to save on a drive, then put it back.

There is no direct route XP to 7 unless you want to do a clean install, and
then reinstall all your programs. If you are simply wanting to do an upgrade
to preserve you program installations, you have to go XP>Vista>Windows7.

Or you can try one of these methods:
Upgrade XP to 7: http://cnettv.cnet.com/upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7/
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7

As always, a backup or image of your current drive should be made before
attempting anything like this.

I've used PCMover on my own machine. Buy the version without the
cable on Amazon. It's $9.99. After the install it asks you to
identify whether your machine is the "old" or "new" PC. For the XP
os, select "old". Then select the files you want to migrate. PcMover
will create a file on the old machine which identifies the files and
apps and registry settings you want to move. Accept its default
location. After it's done, begin the 7 install. If you are
installing on XP, accept the "new install" choice. You cannnot
upgrade XP to 7. The install will create a file called something like
windows.old which will contain all your old files and registry
settings. Once you are on 7, install PcMover again. Run it and
choose "new machine". It will find everything it saved from the XP
run and migrate them to 7. So, for example, all your old My Documents
will end up in the Windows 7 folder. And most your apps will work.

And before you do anything, use backup software which will allow you
to restore your XP machine if something goes wrong.

You have to have the old OS on the system when you do a clean install
otherwise the upgrade CD key will not work. It has to be able to create
a windows.old directory with the old os and check it for authentication.
You need a VALID copy of Vista or XP already installed and activated.

I was referring to a FULL Clean version not upgrade, sorry.

Why would you do that? Is there an overriding concern in wanting to
'upgrade' to win7? What do you anticipate it will do for you that your
current install won't?

I used the Laplink Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant.

I posted a long article here on 11/09/09. Pay attention to the
instructions. There are programs you will have to re-install and/or
re-activate. Some things will not work depending on what version you
install, 32 or 64 bit.

programs, Norton Ghost 9 and a couple of other items.

Make sure you go to the PC makers site and download new drivers and if
necessary a new BIOS update before you make the move.

Amazon has the PCMover Upgrade Assistant download for $9.49US ($9.99 for the
CD). It's used for upgrading to Windows 7 on the same partition that the
current OS resides on. I haven't tried it yet, so I can't vouch personally
on how well it works.

I can vouch for it because I've used it on 2 computers. It works as
advertised. :)

Thanks for the mention of Laplink PCmover. Our new editions of PCmover for Windows 7 make it possible to move ALL (or all selected) of your programs, files and settings from XP or Vista to Windows 7. We are the only software that can move your programs (Windows Easy Transfer cannot do this).
Also, PCmover is the only software that can perform an in-place upgrade on your existing computer from XP to Windows 7. This enables users to keep all your programs, files and settings when you upgrade to the new operating system.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me directly. You can also visit www.laplink.com/pcmover for more information.

No, it's not difficult if you're willing to do a clean install rather
than an 'over the top' upgrade. What issues are you having?

Buy Laplink PcMover at Amazon. It will enable you to move files and
apps from XP to 7 without Vista on a relatively clean install.
