Do all netbook computers need to come with Windows 7 Starter Edition, as opposed to Home/Premium/Ultimate?

I have only seen netbooks that ship with Starter Edition as standard, and I wasn't sure if this was just done to keep the cost of a netbook down, or if MS have stated that you can't ship anything higher with a netbook?

I think it's just a voluntary standard to keep prices down. I know HP is offering very cheap upgrades to 7 Home on (at the very least) their awesome lineup of NVIDIA ION netbooks.

I was under the impression that the reason for netbooks to have just the Starter Edition was because of the size of the operating system itself. Basically that the netbooks couldn't hold (size wize) Home Premium or up.

My thoughts would be the word "Starter". In other words not a permanent solution.

It has also come to my attention that MS has intentionally fixed the Desktop background so that it is not easily changed. Perhaps this is also to push people past the starter edition while allowing for cheaper sales initially.

Starter edition is a load of phoey! Plus I have 7 Pro running on my lovely little netbook just fine, it runs EVE too. :D

I can only think its to keep the cost of the netbook down.

I dunno man. I've been looking at alot of netbooks and the majority I've seen as of late seem to have XP Home. Although this wasn't online.

Lots of older netbooks still come with XP, but I don't think we'll see any new models ship with XP anymore. I can understand skipping Vista on a netbook, but XP has such a limited lifespan and capabilities now. :)

I think he is referring to the lack of features, not just the wallpaper but all the features.

I see the word starter as a temporary solution that should not even be sold. It appears MS labeled it starter and is using the wallpaper as one of the tactics to push customers into an upgrade.

The application restriction has been removed but here(link below) is everything else that an OS is missing. Like I said earlier I have Win7 Pro running on my Acer Aspire One D150 and it runs like a champ. Normally I have Google Chrome running with Eve Online, Winamp and I'm usually playing some emulator while jumping in Eve, all running just fine.

The link below shows what all four editions can and cannot do.

Great name, really digg'n it!

Keep checking out www.woot.com they have a netbook on there about once or twice a month for great prices. Then when you go to buy a two gig chip of RAM buy an OEM copy of Win7 [insert flavor here].
