Im about to toss win 7 out my window, when i had XP installed i was able to download at about 20mbps from news servers and speed tests, after installing windows 7 ultimate x64 my downloads are stuck at a MAX of 8-10 Mbps, and apparently i cant really change anything since its all "dynamic". I'm not going to pay for 20mbps ISP and pay for a news server if i cant use my full bandwidth, freaking windows 7. Can anyone help me?

- Firewall and antivirus off
- safe mode same situation
- Normal and experimental and highly restricted and disabled RWIN all made no difference

Can you send us your computer specs so we can see what were working with.

What brand are you adaptors and what speed are they. also what type of cable are you using if any.

I would guess the op is comparing the same machine, with the two different OS's. It would indicate a harware incompatibility, or below quality drivers for the new OS. I am getting very much faster speeds with 7 than my wife's XP or my previous Vista installations.

Im running an Asus M3n-HT with a Phenom 965Be, no add-ons except my video card Nvidia 8600GT. Motherboard and video card drivers where installed through nvidias website. Network shows connection of 100mbps, the cable service and router have been the same and not changed but its a 16-20mbps Isp, with a linksys router, and cat5e cable. Ive tried everything i could think to find something or some setting that limits the connection to 10mbps but since my expertise of windows 7 is pretty low right now i'm out of ideas. If you need any more info or ideas let me know

It's probably a driver issue, not 100% sure, but I've had a similar problem too yours and that was the case. maybe even try something as simple as resetting your router if you already haven't.

I did a little research and the main things I found that helped others with this problem was, updating the driver for your ethernet device or wireless card from the manufactures site instead of the one Microsoft installs or try looking to see if there is a newer fireware out for your router.

A free visit to Driver Max may help you get your drivers updated. That's a must, regardless of where you do it. They have a free version, which scans your computer and allows two driver downloads per day. There's a couple of paid options also. With them, the driver downloads are unlimited and you can update every computer in the house. It bailed me out when I installed Windows 7 on a eight year old laptop. It wouldn't "sleep". Now it does. The paid ones doesn't cost much, you're paying for how much time you want. Check it out, you have nothing to lose. Just remember to create a backup before downloading anything. Hope this post is useful to you.

Problem solved. WHY this made a difference i have no idea since i had not touched my router settings for over two years, upgraded router firmware and added port 119 to my router forward brought my test speeds back up to 20mbps, did couple tests and with it disabled speed dropped to 10, enabled back up to 20. Again no difference except win7 and havnt changed router settings ever since i bought the thing, im not gunna try to figure out why it works lol.

thanks everyone

Probably the router firmware, glad you got it working. Now you can fully enjoy Windows 7.

Glad things worked out for you, I don't like to see people giving up on Windows 7 over small issues. You kept messing with it until it worked. And as a result of your looking for an answer, all of your drivers are updated. Had to be frustrating to you for a while, I know the feeling very well. As a reward for all of your hard work, enjoy Windows 7 to it's fullest. It's the best OS on earth.
