Windows 7 Ate My XP (sob!) ...sort of.
On the same machine I have Windows XP Pro & Windows 7.
Mostly I am still using XP.
It XP Drive needed a defrag so did this from the Windows 7 installation
(on an entirely separate Disc ) There is no Boot Menu. I choose which system
I boot
into in the BIOS.
When in use XP is Drive C . When I'm in Win 7 the XP drive is listed as F:
& Win 7 is C:

After that Defrag I found the Win XP would not Boot fully.
It got to the desktop but displays the error msg.

"A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for
this computer, Error code: 0x80090006" and windows will not allow logon.

Much (very much) searching produced the info. that this (MS say) is due to
the Drive letter
having been changed or critical files being moved.

I tried many (very many) tricks n tactics but have had to do a Repair /
Upgrade
reinstall to get it working. (in a messy sort of way)

Sooooo ! experts, why did Win 7 Defrag mess it up ??
Should we never do a System Disc Defragmentation from another O/S outside.

That pretty much sums it up, as another O/S might change something the
native OS would never touch as it knows better than to do that.

It's rather a shame though, since it would be a chance to defrag some of the
things one can never defrag from the running OS because they are in use. For
instance the NTFS MFT.

On the other side, it should be pointed out that this IS the 21st
century. A properly designed file system should not need constant
defragmentaion.

Its Lovely me the Thread Starter .
I THOUGHT the XP Repair Install had sorted it BUT after 2 days working
(little whimper!)
I've just found the same situation. Won't Log on big problem is back >>!!
(Big sob!)
I can get it to run in Safe Mode.
WTF is happening ?? this can't be about defrag.

I'm starting to suspect nasty problems from a (recently appeared) Trojan /
Virus
thing "DesktopLayer.exe" in Programs/Microsoft.
along with " firefoxSrv.exe " in Programs/Mozilla/Firefox .
My Anti-Malware prog(s) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has been detecting it for
a week or
more but can't cure it...it recreates itself repeatly . I didn't think is
was causing
noticeable problems but its clearly getting more active in both my Win XP &
7 & Vista installs.
I can find no sign (Google) of any body with a solution.
(Has Windows Defender EVER detected anything ??? I can't believe how useless
it (seems) to be.)

Oh we've that same line from you before yet you can't explain why there
are defraggers for linux.
Oops!
Oh, please do share with the rest of the planet your munificent wisdom on
the matter of Linux file system fragmentation fWANK. I appear to have
missed some vital information over the last decade or so, and desperately
need to be informed by your Linux guruness.

I had a friend who got a nasty virus, we'd delete it with Malwarebytes
but after rebooting and doing a few things it came back. So we got smart
and ran Malwarebetes and cleaned it, rebooted, and immediately ran
Malwarebytes again, problem solved.

Upload your files to virustotal.com and have them scanned. If you have
firefoxSRV.exe, then upload that. If any tool "sees" it on virustotal,
then check the web site of the AV company and see if they address the issue
on an information page.

And keep looking, because people are seeing it right now.

explain why there are defraggers for linux.
You must know a lot more than me about the subject of "defraggers for
linux", your most eminent guruness. Please disseminate the shining light
of your wisdom so I can kowtow to your utmost superiority.

I'm no the dumb, stupid, arrogant POS posting about linux in a Windows 7
ng. That idiot moron would be you.
Oops!
We aren't the ones who brought up Linux in the first place, your holy
druidness of Linux Knowledge. You did. In this thread. Specifically:

"Oh we've that same line from you before yet you can't explain why there
are defraggers for linux.
Oops!"

So explain to me why I need to defragment an Ext2/3/4 file system and
which particular package I should use. I am waiting with breathless
anticipation for the sows-ear of your wisdom.

Beats the hell out of me! I've been using Linux regularly for over 10
years - I've never known anyone to use a defrag tool in Linux. I think
there are some for the 'older' file systems like ext2 - I'm not aware of
any for the more recents FS's.

Thanks for answering.
I can't remember the last time I defraged a Windows OS...maybe Win 95
OSR2.
Apparently, you're the exception.

I started this thread ;)
I now think my problem is caused by a VERY nasty Virus ...most likely
"Ramnit.a"
Or though I think it wise to not Defrag or Scandisk with Repair System File
option,
with a different Windows Version.

He went to the Ubuntu forum. He claimed he went there to back me back
for posting here. He got soundly refuted and made to look the fool but
he came back to the Vista General group claiming "pay back's a bitch"
and how he really told them off, yada, yada, yada. Frank's the most
pathetic troll I've ever met on Usenet.
The thread is not showing up in Google yet. Got a link?
PS: Most trolls know when to give up, which is what makes this all so
entertaining. In his case there is an inverse relationship between his
online personna and... reality.
