windows 7 and Network Places ,network to XP Pro?

I am trying to get the new w7 to recognize and network to/with xp pro but the two don't want to remain linked? Is it simply because of the xp pro sleep mode? I don't see old standard network places anymore? Homegroup looks to be limited to w7?

start,User settings
share with menu, make sure to open and set the second window to share Homegroup?
