With the specials going on now, why are you stuck on a sony vaio? You can get a lot of quality laptops with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit at a great price. Most of the promotions that I've seen are 64 bit. That's what mine is, it runs a lot of 32 bit as well as some 64 bit applications fine. And you would be happier with Home Premium over Home Basic. Is that the best that the Sony Vaio of your choice runs? And what applications is it that you're concerned about? The answer to this would help us help you.

If the laptop comes with Windows 7 64 bit installed on it, it will work just fine. As for applications, Windows 64 bit supports both 32 and 64 bit software. Almost all of the software I have tried " which is a lot" works just fine. A few programs I have installed required me to use Windows XP compatibility mode. Windows Home Basic, does not have this feature. So it may lead to you having some issues running " mostly older" software.

If the laptop is priced right, and you can afford too, I'd recommend upgrading windows to at least Professional.

Hope this helps

Unless you need the extra features that Professional offers over Premium. Personally I don't see a need in the average home user needing anything more than Premium.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit without problems.

Here is a link showing the differences in all the versions

I asked that question a few weeks ago, about the Windows Anytime Upgrade. For my purposes, it wasn't worth the bother. And if I wanted to go Pro, I'd buy the full retail version and install clean. As Clifford said, Home Premium should suit most users. If I needed it for a job, then I would consider Pro or Ultimate, but being they both costs so much, I'd go all the way to Ultimate.

Yeah, my bad. I had forgotten home premium does offer the XP compatibility mode. The PC I owned offered the free upgrade, which I used for a little while. A friend of mine, who's hard drive I replaced for him not long ago had gotten Windows Ultimate with 3 licences. He offered me the 3rd for giving him the hard drive and helping him get everything running right. I've been using it for about a week.

But I must say, for my typical use I don't really notice a whole lot of difference from Home Premium.

That's why I didn't mess with it. If you need it, it does offer Bit Locker, whatever that is.

If the Windows Ultimate program was given to me, I most certainly would run it. The security is better, but not enough for me to purchase it. mattweed9, you came out good on that. A friend showing his appreciation for helping out. That doesn't happen often. You may as well run it since you have it, I would.

Don't get "XP Mode" confussed with "XP compatibility mode". They are two different things. Windows 7 Premium does have "XP compatibility mode" but not "XP Mode"
