I'm looking for additional wallpapers for Win7. What would be a good
source to look into for wallpapers - the current wallpapers on my
system are in the .jpg format for Dell computer.

They will work as wallpaper for Windows 7. You will need to set the
desktop properties to "Stretch" to fit them to you monitor, at which
point they will automatically be resized dynamically to fit your
desktop. Put them in a folder you can easily find, and browse to them
using the personalisation section of your display options.

Any .bmp, .jpg or .jpeg file can be used. I've not tried using .png
files, but they may well work too. You may want to resize the files to
match your monitor resolution, but that's not vital.

All my computers have wallpaper pictures taken by myself.

I've even used the desktop wallpaper and themes from the Windows '98
Plus! pack on a Windows 7 machine. The only failure was that some of the
screensavers didn't work, but they are 16 bit programs...

Thanks all for the replies.

Or any of your own pictures. There's nothing special about a wallpaper
file. It's just a photo.
You can even set it to a slideshow, of your own or the provided
pictures. Though when I tried to play with it, I found it an absolute
pig to set up, compared to the third-party and ancient "panorama32"
wallpaper changer I'd been using since at least Windows 9x (which I
think wouldn't run under 7).

I must say I love all this technical jargon. Jargon like "Resized
Dynamically". What other ways of resizing are there? Can images be
"Statically Resized" too?

There are several options of displaying the image on the desktop. And it
only takes a few secs to try them all out as you can preview the effect
of the various options instantly.

But when I see reference to "Dynamic Resizing" I don't know whether to
get annoyed at the unnecessary jargonese or to blame myself for not
knowing essential technicalities.

Now, can someone please tell me which it is to be?--

PNG works fine. All my desktop images are 16m color png.

Most of mine are built from images available from NASA.

Blame yourself :)

Resizing is like gearshifting - it can be manual or automatic.

Me tinks me understand vat ya mean but I am still not 'appy with the
word "dynamic" as used in this context. Yes, there are different ways of
doing things. Agreed. But what is the "dynamic" in "dynamic resizing"?

dictionary.com gives Cocky or Brassy as synonyms but that still leaves
me baffled. More baffled in fact than your auto and manual gear shift
analogies! ;-)

It seems I can't win. :-(

I really thought you'd see that in this context dynamic is used to mean
automatic.

More literally it might mean on the fly, but the semantic difference
here is minor: it's happening without user intervention.

I think you're correct to be fussy in this case: the phrase that tripped
your trigger was "at which point they will automatically be resized
dynamically". Since it already included the word "automatically", I too
do not see what the word "dynamically" meant.

I take "resized dynamically" to mean the image is resized in memory
before being sent to the display. "Statically resizing" would be
permanently resizing the image and storing it in an image file. A lot of
the images I use for my desktop have been "statically resized" from the
original.

"Dynamically resized" means that the jpg is read from the disk, then
the program resizes (stretches or squeezes) the image to make it fit
the screen. The original jpg file is not changes. In that case, to
statically resize something, I suppose, would be to save the changed
version back to the disk, so the operation would not have to be done
each time the file is read.

Yes, that DOES make sense. But it still makes for verbosity when
"automatically" and "dynamically" are used within the same sentence, as
John Gilliver has already pointed out.

"Dynamically resize" may mean the image is distorted to fit the screen
proportions. If the image has to be enlarged to fit, there will be some
fuzziness, which may be an advantage for a background image. It works
well only if the image proportions are the same as your monitor's. Eg, I
have an "HD" monitor, 1920x1080 pixels, or 16:9. Any 16:9 image will fit
exactly.

Of you don't want to see distortion, resize and crop. "Static resize"
can be done with image editing software. (Several image viewers have
such basic operations built in. See below). Find your monitor's
dimensions in pixels, resize to fit the horizontal measure, then crop
off top and/or bottom to fit the vertical measure.

Free image viewers with basic editing software (and other goodies):
Irfanview, XnView. I can recommend them both, they have different strengths.
