If you mean the model number string or serial number, then (a) yes it is
[in most cases - there might be some that don't have a serial number],
and (b) I don't know if there's anything that scrambles it - almost
certainly not, since it is hard coded, so any such software would have
no effect when the drive is put into another computer.
If you mean the string like "Jim's thumb", then you can change that just
as you can with any drive "label".
