Win7 Photo Import

D

David Kelsey

I cannot get win7 64-bit Professional to import photos from a card reader,
or directly by USB. Usually, I get error 0x80010108, but sometimes nothing.
The import box opens up, but does not do anything. On my other two
machines, a Win7 64-bit Home Premium and an XP SP3, photo import works
perfectly. I've tried restoring, plus as many alternate settings as I can
find, but nothing works. It did once import one picture of the 11 I was
trying to import, but that's it. There are a number of suggestions in
Google for fixing it, but generally they are just to restore or are one or
other of the programs that claim to cure everything, but 'find' 1500 errors
and offer to fix them if you buy the program. I have run Superantispyware
and Malwarebytes, and Norton is installed, plus a gratuitous effort by
McAfee which pops its head up after everything else has performed. I
started to reinstall win7, but the dialogue informed me that the disk I was
using was older than the installed version, so it refused to do anything. I
guess it was because my machine has SP1. Anybody got any thoughts please?
I hope to avoid a clean install, as I am really tired of reinstalling
everything in sight, and I have other ways of importing photos via my
network.

Repair Install is pretty limited in Windows 7. There are
some rules here. Based on these rules, Microsoft could
make a small fortune, selling SP1 retail disks without
license keys :-( I didn't realize my options, after having
installed SP1, are so grim. With Win2K and WinXP I had
more options (and used them).

Is your problem related to a specific program, such as Windows Live Photo Gallery ?

http://www.sevenforums.com/software/139435-windows-live-photo-gallery-error-code-0x80010108.html

The error number 0x80010108 relates to something about RPC (remote procedure call)
and being disconnected. Like a program tries to communicate with some
service, and gets abruptly dropped. In the Sevenforums, they interpreted
that as "inability to locate a resource", which isn't quite the same
thing. So maybe the error number isn't directly indicative of the
problem.

I am saying what I wrote below because perhaps the conflicts I describe
there can cause your problem, since AV programs can block things
unexpectedly. That might not be the cause here, but the advice is good
anyway...

It is generally recommended not to run to antivirus programs at the same
time, since they cause conflicts with each other. I think you are saying
that you are running Norton AV and McAfee AV at the same time. It is
better to uninstall one. You have to download the full uninstaller from
the manufacturer to do it right.

What exactly do you mean by "importing" photos? Do you mean just moving
them, as files, from drive e: (or whatever your card reader or USB stick
shows as) to (say) drive C:, by dragging in explorer, or something
similar - or, do you mean something that is special to picture files?
