Win 7 64 backup recommendations

DGDevin

I just got a new external hard drive (the two old ones aren't big enough to
backup my new C: drive) and I'm looking for recommendations for backup
software to use with Win 7 Pro 64. I've been using Windows backup so far,
but I would also like something that backs up in a format that allows me to
access files directly, i.e. if I just need to restore some photos or music
files I can do that without restoring the whole drive. I formerly used
Bounceback Express that came free with an old Seagate drive--I liked the
scheduler and the fact that folders and files were individually available in
their native format. I also used Acronis True Image (each program backed up
to a different external drive) but when the day came when I tried to restore
a drive True Image didn't do what I wanted it to despite it having a good
reputation at the time.

The latest version of True Image seems to be getting horrible user reviews.
I'm tempted to get the latest full version of Bounceback but there also I'm
finding some conflicting user reviews including one that said the scheduler
doesn't work under Win 7 64-bit.

So if anyone can recommend a backup program that keeps files in their native
format, has a good scheduler, backs up only files that have changed and that
works with 64-bit Win 7, I'd like to hear about it.

I have used Casper for years and it's fantastic.

If you need any files you screwed up after the last backup, they are
readily available on the backup drive.

If your drives lunches, you can exactly as it was at your last backup.

I use an external enclosure and can just pop the backup drive in your
main box and be good to go. I have esata and can even run off the
external.

USB works just fine to backup if desired.

I use it on two towers and also my laptop using an external enclosure
and can just pop that drive in my laptop should my main drive have
issues.

It does everything you want and the new version works perfectly with Win
7 64.

I see they say you can boot from an external drive too, that would be
necessary as this new drive is enclosed in a fireproof/waterproof enclosure
(IoSafe, got it on sale). Thanks for the info!

RoboCopy is already on your system and can be placed in a batch
triggered by Win Task Scheduler. Lots of info online using Google search.

I've been using Macrium Reflect Free for a year with both XP & Win7
and back up to an external or internal drive. Not a problem to date
-- and I have restored twice simply to test it. It was recommended by
a computer consultant friend who has also changed from Acronis TI as I
have.

+1. You can also view the image and pick what you want from it.

In addition to the suggestions in the other replies, there are a couple
of free programs from EASEUS that act like Casper and Macrium or
Acronis.

I've used them without problems (well, sometimes an opaque user
interface, but they all have that trouble), but I'm not sure of how to
rate them.

The home page is http://www.easeus.com/

Their utilities include
1. Todo Backup - similar to Macrium and Acronis; it includes a cloning
capability.

2. Disk Copy - a cloner

3. Partition Master

There are free and non-free versions of most of their software.

I use Cobian. It's free (though best to make a contribution if you adopt it
regularly of course).

I've been using Easeus for some time. Works well, but didn't the OP
want a scheduling facility? It's not available in the free Easeus.

I second that - I use Casper on 3 different computers in the household,
and it's saved my bacon - never failed when needed. Once the first
clone is done, repeat clones are very fast.

I clone weekly, but also have a simple batch file that I run every
day, or more often sometimes, that copies to the backup drive, any data
files that have been added or modified.

Good point.

For whatever reason, I haven't done much scheduling of backups, so I
never noticed. I should have thought of it anyway ;-)

OTOH, if EASEUS has a command line, it might be possible to run it under
the Windows Scheduler.

Maybe I'll look tomorrow, it's too much like Sunday night here :)

My new Seagate 2TB external drive comes with its own program Momeo to
automatically backup Win 7 64 bit and then to top up the backup briefly each
time you turn it on. I am very pleased with it so far. There is a 30 day
free trial before you need to decide whether to buy at £29 GBP
