If I use a stand alone wi-fi extender; this one as an example

to use the hard lines, do I need to hook up a hard line from main router to extender/repeater in order to use the rest of the ports.

I wouldn't swear to it but that seems to go against the concept of a Wi-Fi Extender.

You wouldn't need an extender if you had to run a hard line anyway. I believe the ports share the Wi-Fi signal and then the Extender extends a Wi-Fi signal to even greater distances.

From port to port you should see standard switch speeds of 10/100 or 10/100/1000.

All they do is amplify and retransmit wireless signals they receive, so no they wouldn't need a LAN connection, just a power source. eHow
