Why No HTML in my Email?

R

Ricky Jimenez

Starting a few weeks ago, I've noticed all my emails are received in
ordinary text. I have 4 different ISPs and I think it happened at
different times in all of them. I use both Forte Agent and
Thunderbird to receive email. What is this all about?

Might be an antimalware filter blocking HTML cause it can carry hidden
stuff. Added any new antimalware in the past month?

The anti-virus in Norton 360 might have decided to start doing it. I
don't see anything under HTML in the email options. Is there anyway
to tell? Thanks.

Disable Norton 360 and send yourself an email in HTML format.

No HTML even without Norton 360. I am wondering if the problem is
Adblock+. Anybody know what that program does?

I know that Thunderbird has a setting for this.

When viewing a message, click on "View" in the menu bar, then "Message
body as...". The choice seems to stick, so the following messages will
be the same until you change it again.

I know of nowhere other than while viewing a message to see this.

The TB Add-on "Toolbar Buttons" (http://codefisher.org/toolbar_button/)
makes it easy to move between HTML and plain text. Just install it and
drag the "HTML Mode" button to your toolbar.

AdBlock+ is a browser add-on, as far as I know, but you said you're
using Agent and Thunderbird as your email clients, so browser stuff
wouldn't be relevant. My version of Agent, 2.0, doesn't do HTML email,
(I'm not sure about your version), but I assume Thunderbird is
capable. If it's not your security software, I'm guessing it's a
configurable setting in Thunderbird that's messing you up.

In Thunderbird click View
Message Body As
Original HTML
Simple HTML
Plain Text

Good to know. OP Ricky Jimenez, are you listening?
Yes I am. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread. I tried to
add the "Toolbar Buttons" to Thunderbird but was unsuccessful. Perhaps
the package is not compatible with Thunderbird 3.1.9. However, I did
find the menu items in both programs to enable HTML content and they
had been both turned off for some unknown reason. So I turned them
back on and now I get the prompt to download the HTML images when
viewing each email item. Also, I again get messages marked as spam by
Norton 360 which also had been disabled.

As you can see from "Message Source" I'm running TB 3.1.9. Toolbar
Buttons works just fine.

Try downloading the XPI file again to your desktop and reinstalling,
just in case it was corrupted first time.

I see the problem now. The link marked Install (For Firefox) is the
one with the xpi file. I had selected the one marked Download (For
Thunderbird & Sunbird) which has a package without the xpi file,
toolbar-buttons-1.0.zip. What are you supposed to do with that
package? I was able to add buttons to my toolbar after installing the
xpi file. Thanks.

I don't understand. The one marked "Download (For Thunderbird &
Sunbird)" downloads a file called toolbar-buttons-1.0.xpi (I don't see a
zip file). You then install that using TB's Tools | Add ons |
Extensions | Install facility.

The FF add-on can be installed directly from the webpage - that's the
only difference as far as I can see.

Still, you got it working - that's the important thing. It's a tad
easier than using the "View" menu.

Truly strange that those links behave so differently for us. I am
using IE9. For both links I simply left clicked and IE gives the
options of open, save or cancel. The zip file contains:
chrome.manifest,icon.png. install.rdf, LICENCE,
defaults\preferences\toolbar_buttons.js, chrome\tbutton.jar. .
