I'm any large individual files should be moved there but can I move data
folders like:
C:\users\owners\downloads
C:\users\owner\pictures
C:\users\owner\video
I use those folders only for temporary storage until I decide what to do
with the stuff I've downloaded "for later perusal". On my internal data
drives I've created several folder trees, eg, Work, FamilyPictures,
Scans, Music, etc. I have set all my data-producing programs to use
these folders, not the "libraries" etc on the system drive. (I don't
use programs that don't allow this.) This way, data is automatically
stored on the data drives.
Downside: you have to be careful to select the correct folder (eg,
FamilyPictures/AuntEmily) when you Save or Save As.
Upside: you have to be careful to select the correct folder (eg,
FamilyPictures/AuntEmily) when you Save or Save As.
Your question indicates that you're actually thinking about preventing
data-loss. So here's a few personal comments:
I also have external drives for backing up data, so pretty well
everything exists in two copies. From time to time, I burn DVDs too. And
I print must-keep e-mail and photos. I've even begun to keep the SD
cards from the camera: I buy a bunch whenever they go on sale.
Does all this sound paranoid? Well, consider this: The Toronto Star last
week reported that a family in Toronto lost a laptop and attached
external drive when their house was burgled. The devices contained
almost all their photos of their young son, who had died about a year
before of one of those untreatable degenerative diseases that you never
hear of until something like this happens. They have a few printed
photos left.
