Volume bar missing from desktop

Emrys Davies

I have Win7 and IE8

Until recently, when I pressed my volume bar on the keyboard, a volume
progress bar showed on the desktop. That no longer happens and there is no
volume icon on the taskbar, although the volume works OK. Any ides. I have
checked all references to volume in Start > Search, but found nothing which
would help.

Well, I went to 'Show or hide volume (speaker) or icon' and Volume was ON so
I changed it to OFF and OK , then I put it to ON and lo and behold the
volume icon is now back in my taskbar and working.

If you ever lose it again, click on the double up arrow at the left of
the taskbar tray and select "Customize..." Look for the speaker icon and
pick the display option you want.

Thanks Dave, I certainly will keep that in mind.

And if you have W7 you could and should have IE9.
Why? I have elected to stay with IE8, why should IE9 be any more than an
option?

Some people don't use IE at all. I haven't used it for years. I use
Google Chrome.

Good for you, but irrelevant. The question is about which version, not
which browser.

The question is about the volume bar which has nothing to with
browsers at all no matter which version of what browser.

I have got used to IE8 and some people have had problems with IE9 or just do
not like it. Better the devil you know!!

For security reasons you should upgrade. IE is an integral part of
Windows.
You keep saying that, but do you have anything to back it up? Microsoft
offers IE9 as an optional upgrade. Nowhere does it say that IE9 is more
secure than IE8 or recommend updating to improve security. Security
updates are generally rated as "Critical," or at least, "Important," not
"Optional." New themes or wallpaper are "Optional." Like Emrys, I tried
IE9 and decided I'd rather stick to IE8.

That alone should convince you, and not just that it's better than
IE8, but better than many (if not all) alternative browsers at some
important things.
However, those savvy enough to employ several good 3rd-party products
on their system can use almost any browser safely. The downside is
all that additional software also needs regular updates and may indeed
cause other side effects (eg slowing of the PC, crashing.)

For an ordinary user currently using IE8, upgrading to IE9 should
really be considered a no-brainer.

Thank you for the specifics.

The ability to drag favourites to task bar for a start. That alone makes
it more useful.
