Hi, I'm a new member looking for info. on changing my laptop from a m/c using Vista home premium 32 bit to an upgraded Windows 7 m/c using 64 bit. I've only been using the old m/c for 4 years from new and the printer etc within the 4 year period too. Will I be able to transfer all my files and programmes to the new 64 bit m/c without too much difficulty as I have limited computer knowledge. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Ashcroft32 - Welcome to w7forums

Changing bit versions will require a clean install. This means that your programs will not be transfered. If you want to transfer all your programs you will need to upgrade to the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

Personally I don't recommend OS upgrades. Upgrading from one OS version to another often has side effects that would not exist in a clean install.

Before you buy anything I would recommend downloading the Windows 7 upgrade adviser and make sure your machine even supports 64 bit - some computers, especially laptops will not.

You should also look into Windows 7 Easy Transfer to migrate your accounts & settings to the new OS (if you choose the more stable fresh install)

I suggest you look into the two programs before making your final decisions.

Please NOTE even the W7 Upgrade disks allow for a fresh install, since you own Vista, don't waste the money buying the Full version of W7.
