You don't say what email client you use, but you can typically export
email to a file and then import it back once the upgrade is complete.

Windows mail is easily transplanted from Vista to Windows 7.

All you need is a Vista PC and a USB memory stick. On the Vista PC open
Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files and copy the Windows Mail
folder to your USB stick. Pop the USB stick into your Windows 7 PC and
copy the Windows Mail folder to the same location
(C:\Program Files). Once in place open the folder hold down the Ctrl key
then click and drag and drop a copy of the winmail.exe icon onto the
desktop to create a shortcut.

Hi, Dave.

You are correct that Win7 does not include any mail client, but Windows Live
Mail is a free download (
http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail?os=other&wa=wsignin1.0 ), and many
vendors bundle it with Win7 on a new machine. And there are MANY
third-party offerings, in case you don't like WLM.

You didn't say if you are upgrading on the same computer, or if you are
getting Win7 on new hardware. Boscoe has told you how to move your mail
files from one computer to another. If you upgrade from WM to WLM on a
single computer, the job is even easier: Just follow WLM's prompts to
Import your data from your WM files to WLM.
so how do I get round not loosing my mail.
Your email are "data", and they are handled quite differently from the mail
application itself, so they will survive the upgrade. Then, all you need to
do is find a mail client - WLM or one of the others - that can find those
files on your computer and use them.

You can indeed run Windows Live Mail, but this post shows you why you don't
want to run WLM 2011.

You can download Windows Live 2009 and use it; at least it can attribute
correctly.

Download Eudora, it's free for personal use.

I would have thought Windows Easy Transfer was the simple solution here.

import your mail from windows mail 2 windows live mail, as windows 7 no
longer contains windows mail. Also you will need to be running Service
Pack 1 or 2 for Windows Vista in order to do a direct upgrade to 7. I
would also suggest waiting to see if the Microsoft Online Store gets
copies of Windows 7 integrated with Service Pack 1 (these all ready
exist on MSDN and Microsoft Technet, however they contain a 180 Day Time
Bomb because the are 4 NON-Production use only). just fyi.

The 180 day time bomb only applies to those who are not MSDN or Technet
subscribers. Perhaps you should go back to Linux, and leave the Win 7
groups alone.
