Updating

Just installed SP1 without a hitch in about 55 minutes including download.

Then went back into MSFT downloads page & signed up for notification
of other MSFT product updates. It had 3 for Office Viewer of which 1
was unnecessary it read after installation.

Also listed and prechecked were about a dozen for Office 2003 which is
not installed on this computer. So I unchecked those and continued
with the 3 for Office Viewer mentioned above.

Question: Why were the updates for Office 2003 included? Could it be
that Office is on this HP laptop as crapware of which I'm unaware?
(Search Start & Uninstall don't carry it. And if it is on the disk,
how to get rid of it? The computer is an HP DM4-1060US.

Because microshaft wants to impose certain products upon you even if you
don't want nuthin to do with it.
I just turn off automatic updating and do that when I want.

Why do they insist on updating several times a day? As I see it, they could
be tapping into your files to see what you've been doing.

Thanks, Richard. I also do not have auto updating turned on -- only
to be notified of updates. And evidently that does not include Office
notifications. But when I specifically asked for updates to MSFT
products it was included and checked to be downloaded -- now why is that?

Uh, huh. And if that were true it would not only be illegal, but someone would
have caught it by now.

Because it is microshaft and they do as they damned well please.
Just like they insist upon everyone must have Internet Explorer and claim
there is no way to uninstall it without upsetting the OS.
I don't use "office" for any reason and I don't want their updates on it
either. Still, they insist.

If you have to take it, there is no reason why you can't get rid of it
later.
As I've said before, Microshaft has refused to understand the word
"personal" in PC.

Indeed. His has Unicorns.

To the OP:

"Question: Why were the updates for Office 2003 included? Could it be

HP has shipped trial versions of Office with laptops for as long as I can
remember.

Try Revo Uninstaller.
Look for C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office to see if that directory exists.
If so, and Revo won't detect it automatically use "hunter mode".

There are many different ways to tap another computer for information
without the owner knowing it.
Did you know some torrent programs can actually do that?
With the right torrent program, I can easily look into every file on your
machine while you're online.
I found this out because I kept noticing that a program was running in the
task manager that I wasn't even using. Even after I uninstalled the main
program.

In one court case involving a torrent program, the prosecutor asked the
defendant, "Did you know that other people can access your entire file
directory simply because you have that program running?" It used to be that
with a torrent program you needed "sharing" permissions. Not no more.

So Microsoft can easily tap into your private little world and know
everything that is on your machine.

I have a broadband service and the modem runs all day and night. I shut
down the computer at night. During the day I would like to be able to
block the Internet connection unless I am going online for short
periods. Is there a switch in the computer to do that without shutting
down the modem?
TIA

Yes, there is, but it's arguably easier and better to simply use a NAT
router between your computer and your cable modem. By default, the
router will block incoming (unsolicited) connections, which I suspect
is most of what you want to accomplish. It won't stop outbound
traffic, so if you have malware running on your computer you'll still
be at risk with or without the router.

To more directly answer your question, you could whip up a batch file
that disables your computer's network connection, but then you'd have
to depend on remembering to run the script. The router, acting as sort
of an external firewall, is on duty all the time.

It wasn't seen by Revo and haven't yet had time to try decrapifier.

Additionally searching Windows/MSFT update history/removal those 3
updates for Office were not seen. It would appear that a "quirk" in
Win7 updates includes office updates, but doesn't install them if the
program is not found. Will let you know more after trying decrapifier

Hi, Miles.

Are you aware of the distinction between "Windows Update" (WU) and
"Microsoft Update" (MU)?

WU updates only Windows and its components, such as Internet Explorer. MU
updates other programs from Microsoft, such as Office and its components.
The distinction is easily overlooked, even by experienced Windows users.

These are discrete services and used to be installed separately if you
installed a Microsoft app such as Office. But now we can easily add MU to
WU by simply checking a box on the WU page. In Win7, click on WU, then
"Change Settings". On this page, look under "Microsoft Update" and check
(or uncheck) the box in front of ""Give me updates for Microsoft products
and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows". When
this box is checked, WU becomes MU - but it is still referred to as just WU
in most places.

Personally, I DO have the box checked and I am glad to receive notice of
available updates for everything. But I also selected "Check for updates
but let me choose whether to download and install them" (rather than
"Install updates automatically (Recommended)") under "Important updates"
earlier on this page.
