update problem

I'm running Win 7 on an HP Pavilion laptop. When I shut down I get an
update notice that says windows is installing update 1 of 9, then 2 of
9 , and then it just stops and shuts down. This has been happening for
about a month. Its obvious that nothing is being installed. Any
ideas on how this happened and how to fix it? Thanks

Click Start, then type Windows Update, press Enter. See if the updates are
listed there, and try to install them without shutting down.
