Uninstall SP1

I can see the backup files in disk cleanup.

It's supposed to be in Programs and Features, but not there.
Is it really installed ?

Any ideas
Thanks

Hi, Ken.

Run "WinVer" - either from Start | Run or from a Command Prompt window.

I haven't run WinXP in a LONG time, but this works in Win7 and - I'm almost
certain - in WinXP.

But my favorite way is simply <Win>+<Break>. That is, hold down the Windows
logo key while you press the Break key (in the upper right of most keyboards
and often combined as the Pause/Break key - but keyboards vary a lot these
days so it may be harder to find). The System page should pop up on the
screen and, if any SP is installed, it will appear here.

Winver shows sp1. I just did a reinstall from restore dvd's on this
netbook (no sp1 ) and updated from starter to home premium. Downloaded
SP1
and updated. After getting all the updates (80 something) I was just
looking for the sp1 uninstall and could not find it. My other machines
don't show it either, but I deleted the backup files on them.

I guess all the ms updates must kill the uninstall for sp1.

I did a backup before installing SP1, which would be my
"uninstall" option, back when I did it. Once SP1 appeared
stable, and didn't throw any wobblies, I could turf the backup.

This is one of the disadvantages of offering SP1 through
Windows Update. It tempts users into bad practices.
While SP1 is relatively safe (it will "back out" if it
hits an error during installation), that does not include
a failure during the subsequent reboot. If you have a failure
at that point in time, the system could be effectively trashed
(can't go forward, can't go backward). If it fails at that point,
it might no longer be bootable, and require a "God of Computing"
to fix it.

Choosing to download the SP1 update separately, makes it seem
all the more ominous, and then a user might suspect a backup
was a wise thing to do. Backups are the ultimate "undo" after all...

That tick box in Disk Cleanup, if you choose to use it, removes
the option of uninstalling SP1. So should only be selected after
you're sure SP1 is working.

In XP days I read somewhere that windows updates to a sp did not put
everything in. Just what the ms update saw needed. Since then I have
downloaded all sp's.

True or false, I didn't take any chances.

Did you already mention why you were looking for it?

Hi, Ken.

In Win7, under Programs and Features, the list of programs does not include
non-programs, such as KBs and Service Packs. But the menu on the left that
offers "View installed updates". Click that to get a page - or multiple
pages - of updates for Windows, for Office, and even for some non-Microsoft
apps such as Adobe Reader and PerfectDisk. Scroll way down under Microsoft
Windows; there are now 100 updates in my listing including "Service Pack for
Microsoft Windows (KB976932)", dated 2/22/11. Doesn't even say SP1 or Win7,
but that is SP1 for Win7.

Does your listing of Installed Updates have that KB?

Thanks, that was what I needed. It did say service pack so I just over
looked it.
