Two questions

D

Dave

1. Someone posted a link and/or tip concerning a rescue disk. I managed to
screw up the burn, didn't have time to continue with it and now I can't find
the original file. Would whoever posted that post it again?

2. Does anyone know of a good usenet search engine? I searched for that and
the only hits I got were for binaries, which I already have, and none for
groups such as this one.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

It won't search this group, though. For some reason, Google refuses to
add it to their repository.

Thanks, I hadn't realized that, and I wonder why that's so.

You could try searching all downloaded messages for keywords.
From the Edit menu (Alt-M to toggle the menu bar if you can't see it)
Find > message
Make sure it says alt.windows7.general in the 'Look in:' box and enter
any keywords in the Message box.

Can you remember the name of this rescue disk or the context in
which it was mentioned ?

This might not be the answer you're looking for, but I have always
found it easiest to maintain my own archive for certain groups. That
way you can search to your heart's content.

Since you're starting from scratch, you'd have to decide how much
history you want, then download the posts back that far and continue
going forward. If your current Usenet provider doesn't have the
history you want, you could either buy a small block of Gigs at
Astraweb, for example, or perhaps use one of the many free trials that
the premium Usenet providers always offer. That would give you several
years worth of history, if not more.

I've asked them several times to add alt.windows7.general. Not that
they would necessarily be paying attention to me, but I assume plenty
of other people have also asked.

In *what* program?

I don't use Google Groups, so I know nothing about it. Does it search
_any_ alt. groups?

The program the OP is using to read this newsgroup - Windows Live Mail.
(If you look at the properties of the post you can see the newsreader listed.)

Yes, yes--I know. In all probability you are right. My point was that
his message about what keys to press is *meaningless* if he doesn't
tell us what program he's talking about. He perhaps thinks that
because he's using Windows Live Mail to read newsgroups, there are no
other choices and that's what everyone else also uses. It's like
telling someone if he wants to make his television set louder, he
should press the button in the lower left corner of his remote
control.

That's bizarre, and disappointing. I realize that I've forgotten
something I learned during the thread on converting to NTFS,
something about different ways to start a command prompt with
elevated privilege, and I wanted to go back and find it.

Goes to show you how dependent on Google we are and how important those
archives are. It's a treasure trove of accumulated knowledge. I hate to
think what would happen if Google decided it wasn't worth maintaining.
The fact that they won't add a new group such as this seems to me to be
not a good sign. I can't really think what good it does for them, and
it must be a resource drain. There is no other alternative, no other
active comprehensive Usenet archive that I know of.

I haven't used google for almost 6 months. I use only Bing and I
have never not gotten sufficient info about what I was googling!
:)
I'm talking about Google's usenet archive, not its web search engine.
Bing doesn't seach usenet, does it?

I don't care for Bing's layout for its search results. Maybe I'm just
too used to the way Google does it.

If it's a group you care about, nothing would happen if Google dumped
their archive. You'd simply create and use your own archive for that
group.

It's much easier to do a local search (on your own computer) in one or
more Usenet groups than to do a Google search on those same groups.
It's been a few years since I used Google to search Usenet. I don't
think I would miss it.

I haven't archived anything before now so it would be lost to me. I
could lose the archive through mechanical failure. People should be
able to search the archives in general and get hits in any existing
group.

I would miss it immensely. Poor as the Google usenet archives search
is, it's the only way to search the entire collected wisdom of Usenet
since the mid-'90s.

You obviously forget who you reply to.
Who is this ' he ' ?

Yep, you're right. It was you. Why do you call yourself "the OP"?
Trying to mislead me?

I never called myself 'the OP'.
This conversation with you is pointless. It reminds me of talking
to my mother who had senile dementia in her later years.
Bye.
