Transfer software from old PC to new PC

David Arnstein

I plan to give my Wintel desktop computer to my owl and replace it with
a new Wintel desktop.

For this reason, I am shopping for sofware to assist the transfer of
installed software and data from old computer to new computer. So far
my only candidate is Laplink PCmover Ultimate, but it seems to have some
issues.

Old computer: Dell XPS 710, Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.
New computer: Dell Studio XPS 8100, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Any suggestions? I have very good backups, so I could simply restore
everything from backup media and then re-install all programs. This is
something I would like to avoid if possible.

Because the hardware (chipset) is different and the OS is now a 64-bit
version, there is no chance to transfer your applications to your new
computer. You will have to reinstall, which is an opportunity to start with
a clean environment.

One more point, here...those old client software programs may not be
compatible with Windows 7 64 bit. I ran into this problem with my
AutoCAD software. My old version is not able to function in a 64 bit
computer, and the new version is WAY beyond anything I can justify,
price-wise. Gordon

?HI, David.

Use Windows Easy Transfer (WET), a utility included with Win7 and other
recent Windows versions. Run it first on the "old" computer, directing its
output to a storage location that will be available to the "new" computer
later. Depending on your hardware and the size of your transferred content,
this could be a USB flash drive, an external HDD, or a spare partition on
your HDD - so long as it will be accessible by the new OS.

As ElJerid said, you WILL have to re-install all your apps into your new
system so that each app's Setup program can make entries into your new
Registry. Even if you were not changing "bitness", this step would still be
required. But WET will help to move your data and many of your "tweaks" to
the new environment.

I think that's the first time I've heard of giving a computer to an
owl. Congrats on your creativity and your giving nature.

Laplink will only do XP 32-bit to Windows 7 32-bit. As far as I know,
nothing will migrate the software from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows 7.
Vanilla Windows will save the data, but the apps will need to be
reinstalled and some of them won't work, even in XP compatibility
mode.
