Have used the autohide feature for 3 years but suddenly it will not
hide itself- always showing.

I`ve reset the autohide check repeatedly but still doesn`t work.

bar is not locked.

Ideas appreciated.

Have you tried rebooting the computer?

See if there is anythying "new" in the notification area. A lot of running
programs can cause this. For example: I have Windows Updates set to notify
but not install. When I do install, the Tasbar will pop up and remain
until it's done. You can force the Taskbar to hide as follows.

1. Wait for any copying, deleting, renaming etcetera of files, to finish.
2. Hit ctrl+alt+delete.
3. Choose <Start Task Manager>.
4. Select the 'Processes' tab.
5. Find 'explorer' and end that process. The Taskbar disappears. (This
will also close any Windows Explorer windows, some error messages and the
copying, deleting, renaming etcetera of files that may be running.)
6. Select the 'Applications' tab.
7. Click <New task...>
8. Type [explorer] without the brackets.
9. Click <OK>

It's not as bad as it was in Windows XP, but even in Windows 7 the
explorer sometimes gets confused about the state of the taskbar.

Try opening Task Manager and on the Processes tab end all processes
called explorer.exe. Then, still in Task Manager, File » Run and
type "explorer" (no quotes).

You could reboot, but this is a heck of a lot faster.
