I did a System Restore to a point a week or so ago where everything worked fine. (I did this because a non-functional laptop battery had caused Windows to boot incorrectly.) Now my 64-bit programs work fine, but 32-bit programs have serious issues.
They appear to have particular problems when I access certain functionality.
Working:
VLC player startup
PokerStars startup
Holdem Manager startup
Failure;
VLC Open File menu option.
PokerStars login
Holdem Manager accessing tournament data (from Postgres, although I'd expect it to have logged into Postgres at startup)
The PokerStars issue makes me think this might be related to Internet access, although I can't prove it.
I was getting an error message from WerFault.exe. I turned off the Windows Error Reporting service and don't get the error messages, but programs just fail silently now. (My interpretation is that it was a cascading error with WER but not the root cause; it might provide a hint, especially if WER isn't 64-bit for some reason.)
I've run a virus scan and chkdsk; neither found any issues.
