SOLVED System Restore Inoperative

System Restore has quit working; have tried some of the usual options (Safe Mode, etc.) to no avail. It gets as far as the normal "Please wait while your Windows files and settings are restored. System Restore is initializing..." At this point it hangs up without going any further. I've left it in this state for as long as an hour before forcing a restart. Any ideas folks?
