Start Menu scrollbars

A

Andy Leese

I'm sure the question has been asked many times before, and although I've
searched through Google for quite a while I'm yet to find a convincing
solution:

Is there anyway to remove the annoying scrollbars on the Windows 7 start
menu?

Ideally, I wouldn't want to return to a Windows XP start menu theme... I
suspect it makes no difference, but I am using Windows 7 Professional x64.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

So where are you seeing these scroll bars? I don't have any....

So limit the number of displayed programs. I have 16 showing with no scroll
bars. That's MORE than enough to be displayed...

I do. Click on the start button and you will see that you can scroll up
and down for programs.

I haven't got any, but I'm guessing that they appear when the number of
programs you have pinned to the start menu *plus* the number of recently
used programs you have displayed exceeds the total which you have room to
display in one screen. If I'm correct, if you reduce the number of either
type far enough, you won't get the scroll bars. You can remove any unwanted
"pinned" ones by right clicking them and then selecting "unpin from start
menu". The maximum number of recent programs displayed can be set in the
task bar and start menu properties under > start menu > customize.

I have 18 "pinned" and 10 "recent" and get no bars - but that probably
depends on your screen height and font sizes.

If you want to return to a classic Windows Start menu, I recommend the
Sourceforge Classic Shell.

But if you click on All Programs, you get a scroll bar no matter what
you do unless you use a third party program to change the desktop to
classic or something.
Not if you limit the number of entries by tidying all your programs into
categories and subdirectories thereof. Mine has 17 headings with the
programs off those and subdirectories off those - etc.

I think he means when he clicks Start / >All Programs

I use it. I like it. I have no plans to be without it. :)
It's a huge improvement over the native Win 7 start menu.

I've been using it for quite a few months now and wouldn't be without
it!

I never did like the Win 7 style of start menu but, after installing
ClassicShell, if you really need the original windows start menu on a
once off basis you can get to it by holding down shift key while left
clicking on it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, etc. I just got a Windows 7 laptop in
December and am still sorting stuff out. But I too absolutely detest the
Start Menu and Windows Explorer. Why does MS have to ruin something that
works just fine?

I will continue to lurk and occasionally ask questions........for now, I
have to call HP because I didn't get a Windows 7 Installation Disc and
really think one should have been included.......or is that yet another
of MS's new plans?? I have the sticker on the bottom of the laptop (odd
spot), but no disc.

And the scanner on the eprinter won't scan, saying another program is
blocking it. Hell, I wonder if it is Norton........60 day
trial.........which is coming off today and I will put Avast on. I
couldn't find anyway to turn the damn thing off and knew if I didn't
totally get rid of it, it would interfere with Avast. Do I need to use
the "heavy duty obliterator tool" on the Norton website to get it all out
of my registry??

OK, enuf newbie questions for now, but will definitely put that
Sourceforge Classic Shell on right now.

Thanks Char..........Heather (aka Figgs to the old MVPs, lol)

When my printer gets weird, I sometimes have to unplug it from power and
ethernet (or USB) for a few minutes. It's probably best to do it with
the computer also off.

It doesn't happen often.

One piece of info might help you a bit. Every HP computer I've ever had
always came with a hidden installation partition on the hard drive;
never an installation disc. It contains Windows and OEM software. And
there was an option of copying that out to disc if you wanted, after
which the partition would be erased. There was a program on the Start
menu to handle that, something like "Smart Restore".

Thank you Ed for that tidbit. I will have a look before phoning them.
My last computer was built for me by my local "wonder tech" and I
provided the XP disc that he used to install the O/S......
